After the blistering success of the first Race Driver, the people at Codemasters have decided to give the public a sequel. Dubbed either TOCA Race Driver 2, DTM Race Driver 2 or V8 Supercars 2 depending on where you live, the game promises to deliver more of what made the original what it was.
V8 Supercars 2 will feature all updated car models and drivers to correspond with the 2003 changes to the various championships, with inclusions such as qualifying, top ten shootouts, current race formats and updated points systems.
There will be 30 championships in all, including the V8 Supercars, GT Sports Car Racing, Street Racing, Rally, DTM, Global GT Lights, Rally Cross, Formula Ford, Open Wheel Grand Prix and Classic Car Racing, making for a much more varied experience this time around.
There will be 35 cars in the mix this time, including the Aston Martin V12 Vanquish the Jaguar XJ220, Ford's BA Falcon, Holden's VY Commodore, Mitsubishi 3000 GT, the Mitsubishi EVO 7, the Impreza WRX from Subaru, and many more.
Virtually all of the V8 Supercar championship circuits are included, with delaide, Phillip Island, Eastern Creek Barbagallo, Oran Park, Bathurst, Surfers Paradise, Hidden Valley, Sandown, and Pukekohe Park Raceway. In addition to these, there are alledgedly another 56 international tracks, ranging from the ever reliable Laguna Seca to Donnington Park.
Codemasters claim that physics model, graphics engine damage model and and AI will all be completely new. Gavin Raeburn, producer of previous TOCA games and leading development on V8 Supercars 2, states: "V8 Supercars 2 will be our most ferocious motorsport game yet, with the gameplay distilling the pure adrenaline of the different styles of racing." A vast collection of real motorsports, real rules and real racing cars will combine with our most advanced and intuitive handling model to date. Every physical nuance of each vehicle type is accurately modelled, from tyre deformation when cornering to the centrifugal engine forces and complex aerodynamics.
"Visually, it's going to be stunning. Our new rendering engine features complex dynamic lighting, perspective mapped shadows, multipass textures, procedural standing grass and a host of post production techniques including true motion blur, depth of field and iris effects - all at a rock steady 60fps."
Like the first game, V8 Supercars 2 will feature a story to tie together the many racing events. Codemasters say that the story will follow 12 racers, including your good self, as they race their way to the chance to race as Master's Grand Prix driver, with many racers dropping out as the story progresses.
The game has been underwork for a year now, and is scheduled for an April release next year for the Xbox. And not the PS2, for some completely stupid and unknown reason. Short of getting a large cheque from Microsoft - which, if has happened, has been made publick - there is absolutely no reason to cut off the platform that made the original sell so remarkably in the first place. Perhaps the PS2 will still get a release - just a bit later on in the year, as what happened to the first game. Whatever the case, this is a strange revent regardless. Still, if the game compares to the first, we should be in for a fairly solid game.
