Very rarely will we recieve preview code of a title that has completely gone under the radar. When that happens we get a little excited, as we can play through the game with no preconceived ideas about how it should play. Recently we had an opportunity to do this with Call of Cthulhu Dark Corners of the Earth, which is coming to the Xbox, Playstation 2 and the PC early next year. After a long play we have to admit that whilst we were originally a little wary about this game, it could turn out to be one of the best horror FPS's ever created.
The game has been in development for over three years, and is based on the literate works of H.P. Lovecraft. The game is set in the 1920's and players assume the role of ex police officer Jack Walter, who has become a private investigator.
The first thing we realised about the game was there is no HUD on the screen, this was done purposely to help immerse players in the game. We were thrown right into the game, as a FMV showed Arkham Asylum and a man killing himself, the game then flashes back six years and players assume the role of Jack Walter. The first mission seems simple enough and you enter a house, armed with nothing and trying to work out exactly what you're meant to do, we had the game hints on, which is a good thing because it was hard to know exactly where to go next.
Slowly we navigated around the house until we went underground and discovered that the house wasn't exactly how it seems, the first mission seemed over and we were prompty taken to a different scene. We don't want to reveal the story past this point, as the game looks like it is going to get even more entertaining as it goes on.
The game is promising to include sixteen levels and will last gamers over twenty hours. The game is incorporating a new "insanity" system, as Jack discovers more about the secrets of his past the player will start to notice it is affecting them, and this may bring about interesting side effects.
The long development time has lead to increased interactivity, and Jack comments on just about everything in the each room. Unfortunately, the graphics are looking a bit dated now, as the game is about to enter its fourth year in development.
Call of Cthulhu Dark Corners of the Earth looks like it may be a bit of a surprise title when it hits next week - it successfully combines the genres of horror, adventure and FPS and this should ensure a fresher experience. We're always wary of games that have long development times, but this game could be the exception to the rule.
