PALGN's Periodical Rumour Harvest #11

Xbox News | All about the Xbox 360.
We know it has been a long time since a Periodical Rumour Harvest, but what better way to bring it back but with a huge featurette on the future of the Xbox?

The title:

Oh, we've addressed the title of the next Xbox for months now, in fact, it appeared in one of our previous rumour harvests. However, now we're 99% sure that the next Xbox will be called Xbox 360. All the industry sources are referring to it as Xbox 360 and Microsoft executives have been slipping up recently by calling the next Xbox the Xbox 360, which pretty much confirms it.

The design:

We've done alot of detective work at PALGN and we've managed to uncover an image of the Xbox 260 development kit. One of the most notable things about the kit is that it runs off a Mac and that the case is silver. For a long time now we've been speculating that the console will be silver. Are we right?

We've also managed to score the latest images scattered around the web on the console. These two images look very similar and while we're not sure if this is what the console will look like, we think this is really close to how it might be.

The Games:

From our latest shufflings we've heard Microsoft are going to be launching 30 - 40 games in the first three months of the console, including Burnout 4: Revenge, Madden 2006, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Project Gotham Racing 3, Tony Hawk's Underground 3, Half-Life 2 and FIFA 2006. The big news? Halo 3 is said to launch on the same day with the Playstation 3 (Glad we can look forward to these new, innovative franchises. - Ed.).

The launch date:

How's 2005 worldwide? In under six months we could be playing the 360. It is clear from the beginning that Microsoft have a huge lead and are much more advanced with their next-gen plans than Nintendo and Sony, we fully expect this to launch world-wide by the end of 2005. Guess what we want for Christmas?

The price:

$250 USD seems to be the price floating around at the moment. This could mean Australia recieves the Xbox 360 with a game and a bonus for about $499.95. This is absolutely incredible value, considering the same pack for the current Xbox costs a mere $200 less.

The controller:

Last week we broke the news on the controller. These are some of the pictures we dug up.

So there you have it, all we think we know on the XBox 360. How much of it is true and how much of it is false? We truely don't know, but tune into MTV on May 12th for the official unveileing. PALGN will also be covering it, so you could save yourself the torture of watching MTV and read our report after the event.

Wow, $500 seems really cheap, especially compared to the PS2 launch, what was that, like $600 AUD or something stupidly high. I suppose the DS was cxheaper than most people expected in Australia. I think they'll launch (or around lanch) with Halo something or other. As in not a whole new game, but a propper ending to the 2nd or more maps or something. Maybe a bit like what they're doing now how you can download maps or buy them - in other words I think they'll continue to milk Halo for every cent they can get.

Sequels, sequels, sequels. Is this a good or bad thing? Seriously? Out of those suggested launch sequels, only Project Gotham Racing 3 and Burnout 4: Revenge appeal to me. Hopefully there are some new games as well as these sequels... Time till tell though, naturally.

I should make a note that the MTV premiere for Australian audiences is May 13th at 7pm.

$750 - the dollar was very weak then (hovering around 50 cents), which was a big factor. You must also remember that the Xbox initially bombed in Australia with the $650 price point it was released at - the price tag quickly dropped to $399, and the early purchasers were rewarded with two games and a controller. I am guessing MS doesn't want to repeat this sort of thing (though the Xbox is a fairly strong brand now, compared to back then when it was completely new, so we'll just have to wait and see). That could also just be the price for a base model, if there are indeed two different models (one with hard drive, one without)

I've heard November/December 2005 worldwide launch around a bit, but what would be really cool is if that meant no region coding...

yeah the PS2 was astranomically priced here... i hadn't thought of it being in response to the way the dollar was acting, i suppose you're right...

not that it matters, i had a friend in retail who "price matched" my PS2 to $500 including a memory card and a game... so in reality i only paid $320 for the actual console, much more reasonable...

pity he doesn't work in retail anymore... icon_sad.gif

i am liking the downward trend in launch prices though icon_smile.gif

anything over $250 is a little pricy for me. The DS had the cheapest launch by far!
