Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory Preview

Xbox Preview | PALGN dons it's stealth suit and slips into the shadows to investigate the third title in the Splinter Cell series
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory is Ubisoft's third title in the best-selling series. Everytime a version of Splinter Cell is unveiled everyone begins to rave about how it will revolutionise gaming, and this is no different with Chaos Theory: the game was first presented at E3 in May and was voted the best-looking PC game by game critics. So how does Chaos Theory differ from the previous two Splinter Cell titles? Read on to find out.

The year is 2008. Citywide blackouts... stock exchange sabotage... electronic hijacking of national defense systems... this is information warfare, which has become the most dangerous threat to global stability. To prevent these attacks, you must infiltrate deep into hostile territory and aggressively collect critical intelligence, closer than ever to enemy soldiers. You are Sam Fisher, the NSA's most elite black-ops agent. To achieve your mission you will operate undetected, kill at close-range, attack with your combat knife, shoot with the modular SC20K rifle, and use radical suppression techniques such as the inverted neck break. Work alone, and enjoy the thrill of cooperative multiplayer infiltration missions, where teamwork is the ultimate weapon.

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory features a new set of complex moves which are guaranteed to include athletic and stealth moves as well as stealth kills. The graphics engine in the game has been vastly improved with Ubisoft claiming Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory will be the best-looking game ever, on any platform. The advanced physics engine allows rag doll physics, particle effects and perfect interaction with the environment.

Just like the previous title Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory will feature full online support, as well as the ability for two players to play together through an all new multiplayer challenge.

One of the complaints about Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow was that the title was far too linear. As a result, Ubisoft have gone back to the drawing board and Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory features a totally open level design with multipaths and optional secondary objectives, this should also bump up the replayability of the title.

The AI has been reworked to include personal attributes and natural behavior where non-playable characters are aware of their environment and past events. The storyline is also said to be the best of the series and will feature multiple twists and turns.

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory is sounding like a must have title and has been reworked. We are surprised how much progress Ubisoft have been in only a few months and are looking forward to seeing the final product.

Stay tuned to PALGN for more information regarding Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory as it breaks. Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory will be available in December, 2004 on the Xbox.
Overall:
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory is sounding like another winner for Ubisoft. We just hope it hasn't been to rushed to be out before christmas.
