Goldeneye: Rogue Agent Preview

Xbox Preview | Bond. James Bond.
In 1997 Rare released one of the best games on the Nintendo 64, Goldeneye. At the time, Goldeneye was regarded as an instant classic, and since then gamers have been calling for a sequel. EA, being the king of sequels, appears to have delivered then - or have they?

GoldenEye: Rogue Agent has very little in common with Goldeneye 007 other than the name. In GoldenEye: Rogue Agent, players will take the form of a 00 agent dismissed from MI6 for reckless brutality. In return you are hired by Auric Goldfinger, a wealthy super-villian of the Bond Universe. Goldfinger is in a war against Dr. No and after a battle with Dr. No you’re player loses an eye. Goldfinger’s men replace the eye with a gold eye thus earning the player the name of Goldeneye.

The goal of the player is no longer to save the world, it is to rule it. Goldeneye: Rogue Agent is the ultimate race through the 007 underworld. Players will cross paths with legendary allies and enemies such as Oddjob, Scaramanga, Xenia Onatopp and Pussy Galore. Players will be jet-setting around the world traveling from the mountains of Switzerland to the Streets of Hong Kong.

As with every 007 game, gadgets will feature prominently to aid gamers. However, the most important gadget in the game this time is your upgradeable Goldeneye. This should allow for your player to become more powerful as the battles become more intense.

The AI in GoldenEye: Rogue Agent has been refined so that enemies will react intelligently in combat situations and use the environment to their advantage for intense and unpredictable shootouts.

GoldenEye: Rogue Agent features single-player, multiplayer split-screen and online gameplay for the Playstation 2 and Xbox. It will also be available on the Gamecube but will unfortunately only be playable offline. The offline mode for GoldenEye: Rogue Agent should be just as intense though. GoldenEye: Rogue Agent features many modes aside from the main game including deathmatch style simulator trials and objective-based war games.

So will James Bond himself feature in the game? 007 will make a quick cameo in the first mission as he accompanies you in the opening level. Goldeneye’s partner in MI6 was James Bond, could this mean James Bond will be the final nemesis in the game? We’ll have to see. Goldeneye: Rogue Agent will be out in December 2004 for the Playstation 2, Xbox and Gamecube. PALGN will have more information on Goldeneye: Rogue Agent as it becomes available.
Overall:
We're a bit sceptical of another James Bond title so soon after Everything or Nothing was released, and naming the title 'Goldeneye' will ensure gamers have huge expectations for this title. All we can do is wait and hope the title turns out to be as good as it is looking and sounding.

The videos I've seen are really, really bad. My initial scepticism has been on the mark so far. Might give it a rent once it's out to be sure icon_wink.gif

The game isn't look anything real impressive thus far, but I guess time will only tell if the game really performs and can share a similar title to the successful GoldenEye for the Nintendo 64.

I'm with stone on this one, looks only to be rent worthly at the moment.

i must've been the only person in the world who didn't like the first GoldenEye game...

and making the character called goldeneye because he has a golden eye is the lamest thing i've ever heard... surely people would rather a proper goldeneye sequel, set in the original timeframe to this POS...

i did think the idea of playing an villian character in the Bond universe was a good idea, but the concept was ruined by the apparent story IMO

I heartily agree.
There are some very fond memories of Goldeneye in me heart, my freinds and I arent going to be happy if this is a bad game.

But then again, its made by EA what can you expect, they already ruined Command & Conquer, lets see what they can do to mar the name of a great game. (I really, really hate EA).

*prays that an EA hatrid debate doesn't start...

Anyway I'm not very interested in this either to be honest and I'll probably end up giving it a miss. I didn't mind Nightfire and Everything or Nothing though so it might be worth checking out.
As for the original Goldeneye game, it was brilliant but Perfect Dark wasted it to pieces.. icon_wink.gif
