Rare release six new Kameo screens

Xbox News | Over four years in the making, and the end looks in sight.
Rare have released a further six screenshots of it's forthcoming third-person adventure Kameo: Elements of Power as the title enters the closing stages of development. The game, which was originally intended to appear on Nintendo's Gamecube before being shifted to the Xbox in late-2002, has been pencilled in for a January 2005 release in the US, which should mean we'll have it by next Spring at the very latest.

It's been a troubled development process for the monster-collecting, elements-based game. Originally in development well before the Gamecube's launch for Nintendo's console, the title moved to Xbox along with developer Rare themselves, when the Redmond giant bought the UK developer back in September 2002. Following a well-received appearance at E3 however, and with development confirmed as being in the latter stages, it shouldn't be too long before we get to give Kameo a spin. Expect a full preview soon.

Heh, have to say I've not been the biggest fan of Rare's work since Perfect Dark - their games (particularly their platformers) seem to fall back on any number of staid old videogaming clichés: collectable items and disappearing platforms must have featured in every Rare adventure game or platformer since Banjo-Kazooie - Banjo-Tooie, Jet Force Gemini, Donkey Kong 64, Starfox Adventures and Conker's Bad Fur Day all had them for sure. Still, the collecting monsters aspect of Kameo (and using different monsters to access new parts of the levels) does promise some innovation. We shall, as they say, see.

Well, I liked Jet Force Gemini, but abhored Star Fox Adventures (no matter how pretty it looked), but this game doesn't look half bad. Here's hoping for some decent narrative, an area both SFA and JFG fell backward on.
