The latest instalment of the terrifying franchise puts players in the role of Henry Townshend, a man in his mid twenties residing in a cursed apartment in the town of South Ashfield. After awakening from a nightmare, Henry discovers that he's trapped in his apartment and can't leave because his door was mysteriously chained and boarded shut. After several days inclosed in his own apartment he begins to hear weird sounds coming from the bathroom, he investigates it only to discover a strange tunnel has appeared in the center of his bathroom wall, a tunnel serving as a portal to an alternate world of darkness. With no other way out of the apartment, Henry has no choice but to enter the mysterious tunnel to see where it takes him, thus thrusting him into a whole new nightmare where he will encounter unspeakable horrors.
Silent Hill 4 The Room gives gamers true insecurity as they are now restricted of not being able to carry as many weapons as previous games and that the game’s menu system appears as a categorized list at the bottom of the screen. This will now allow gamer’s to reload, reconstruct and access items without a pause, allowing for a faster game, which will always keep gamers on their feet. As Henry, players have access to multiple randomly placed portals which will enable him to travel back and forth between his apartment and this mysterious new world.
This is by far one of the most intriguing Silent Hill game yet. The gameplay allows for two viewing perspectives. The camera will focus on an all-new first person perspective whenever you’re in Henry’s apartment, and back to a third-person perspective whenever exploring the bizarre alternate world Henry finds himself in after entering the mysterious tunnels. The new camera angles give an all-new feeling of isolation and separation as this allows gamer’s to feed off a completely new feeling in the survival horror game.
Konami has already commented on the fact that this game’s main intentions were to give a loss of innocence and for a loss of security in ones own home. The second plays a major role on breaking down the sense of security of your apartment after each visit. Rooms become darker, decay appears, metal begins to rust and rooms begin to crumble.
With the gameplay players will need to explore a variety of creepy environments of both new and old ideas working in the Silent Hill world. Henry explores large environments, collects important items and solves a series of puzzles in order to uncover clues that will help unravel the mysteries behind Henry's entrapment. The game features all-new eerie creatures that fit perfectly with the mysterious Silent Hill world. Ghosts, dogs, massive blood lust moths, slugs and many more deadly creatures are only a little taste of the monsters that Henry will face in this alternate world.
The most impressive feature of Silent Hill 4 The Room, unlike past Silent Hill games, is that you’re kicked straight into the action at the beginning of the game, which provides players to test their gun shooting against some creepy critters early off. Henry will also have the ability to stomp on fallen enemy’s necks, crushing every ounce of life left in them with his heels.
The graphics are looking simply amazing thus far. The game will be featuring a blurry visual effect, which will produce a more dark and eerie feeling to the game, no doubt scaring gamers with each corner they come across. The graphics are far some perfect from the footage we’ve seen, definitely seen much better in the series, but the game is far from finished and we’re hoping the graphics is an area Konami will be improving on over the next several months.
Silent Hill 4 The Room is being released on the Playstation 2, Xbox and PC hopefully by the end of this year in all PAL regions. Keep a close eye on this game though, since this will certainly be one game which will deliver one of the biggest scare-fest of the year.
