New Rainbow Six Vegas 2 details

360 News | Improved AI, multiplayer and co-op atop the list.
Gaming site Kotaku has received the first details on the upcoming squad-based shooter Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2 in the form of a press release from Ubisoft. The game is the sixth in the highly successful and acclaimed Rainbow Six franchise and is being developed by Ubisoft Montreal.

According to the press release, Rainbow Six Vegas 2 will be "the last chance for gamers to rescue America's sexiest city from an escalating terrorist siege that will impose heart-pounding action from beginning to end". Further enticing fans of the series, Ubisoft goes on to state that "Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2 will push the top-selling franchise to new heights with new gameplay features and groundbreaking co-op and multiplayer modes".

The multiplayer mode will include 13 new maps, two new adversarial modes, additional rewards, and simpler access to online gametypes using the new and more robust matchmaking system. According to Ubisoft, gamers will be able to use the same player identity in both campaign and online modes. Rewards gained in single-player will also be able to be used in multiplayer, and vice-versa.

Rainbow Six Vegas 2 will also feature an improved co-op mode. A friend will be able to jump into the game at any point, with "player maps and storyline [having been] created with co-op in mind, meaning every map has multiple entry points and the story is unaffected". Enemy AI has also been beefed up with tangos now having access to the same gear as players, such as thermal vision, night vision and shields. However, you will be able to counteract these new enemies by taking advantage of intelligence opportunities, such as thermal scanning. Finally, the game will include 11 new weapons, as well new environments, clothing, gear and camouflage.

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2 is currently scheduled for release in March 2008 on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

the last chance...
Well, at least that rules out a R6V3. Not that the series is bad or anything, just that the formulaic re-use of IP's is getting rather bleary.

It may be the last Vegas but it wont be the last Rainbow 6. The series has been around since 1998 and wont be going anywhere soon given the success of RB6V. I quite enjoyed the game (even though I preferred GRAW) and would like to see this non-mindless/tactical shooter series continue. The graphics were gorgeous, the controls were good and the action was in a very surreal setting.

RB6V2 looks to be a pretty standard follow up but that's okay with me. GRAW2 worked out well enough with the same rinse and repeat formula. Not every game in a series has to be series-changing different after all.

Wonderful news. The first game totally blew me away with how exciting it was, and how well the squad controls and cover system worked. The only complaints I can possibly level against it are the weak co-op story mode (skips all the plot) and.. well, the fact that it ended, I guess. Can't wait for this one.

I understand that, and I'm fine with carrying on a series, but I do think that repeating the same context can be taking it a bit far. I mean, how hard would it be to do a different city? Then at least it's not like "GoodGame v2". I'm a little tired of these formulaic and predictable sequels.

Ubisoft probably planned to make a sequel to R6V before they actually made the game. I don't care if it continues on the story which it obviously needs to do. All stories have to be finished right.
