New Xbox Live content excludes Silver subscribers

360 News | Goldies get it all a week earlier.
Major Nelson has stated that since the big Dashboard update hit on Tuesday, Microsoft's plan to give Gold Xbox Live members extra benefits has been implemented, so that from now on, Gold subscribers will have access to demos and downloadable content a whole week before it becomes available to Silver members.

So, if you're only Silver, you'll get this lovely message:
"This item is currently for Xbox LIVE Gold members only. Silver members can check again in a few days or upgrade to an Xbox LIVE Gold Membership." This has already taken effect, with newly released BioShock content for example being available exclusively to Gold members at the moment.

"This is not done to annoy our Silver members-limited time exclusive access to content is just one of the many benefits of having a Gold Xbox Live account." Major Nelson adds. So, Silver members... are you annoyed?

Hmmm I thought this had always been the case to be honest.

I don't care particularly. If I was that into Live and cared about having things a week earlier than some arbitrary release date, then I'd be a Gold subscriber anyway.

So taking away from the Silver adds value to the gold? This just makes PSN look better. Im allready not happy that we have to pay for lag prone P2P multiplayer. Next we will probably have to pay 50 MS points for demos.

Annoying but understandable - MS obviously wants to broaden their gold subscription service, and they can't do it by offering multiplayer as the only benefit.

Luckily I have a 1month gold card from when my 360 broke, so it won't affect me straight away. I imagine that this won't apply to all content either, mainly to some games and to content.

sounds badongo to me. Is gold actually getting this content earlier, or is it just being delayed for silver..... *thumbs down*

i was wondering why i woke up this morning feeling superior to some other people.

i guess next week you Silvers will catch up.

Even though I have a gold subscription on Xbox Live, I'm only there to play games against others. If the particular game I am playing contains downloadable content yet this content requires payment, I'm not going to buy that content. I'm cheap. I'm not going to download and pay for the new Halo 3 maps, I'm going to wait till this content is free.

I can wait, so why can't you?

I'm happy to shell out $80 a year for a good stable online gaming and perhaps even 'exclusive' content. I check the new downloads almost everyday and will download almost any video to check out a new game. Either way, I signed up on day one (well when Splinter Cell: Pandora tomorrow come out) and have love the service as it has evolved.

I don't mind playing for an awesome service with great functionality. You can argue that Sony and Nintendo have free offeringss but they are both sub-par at the moment and SHOULD be free.

This has been the case for a long time. Major was just reiterating that fact because it's more obvious now with the new dash update.

I think this has been the case on some demos in the past and obviously multiplayer demos, but I guess it's across the board now.

Now something I'd liked explained is where is Asteroids and weirder where is Boom Boom Rocket on XBLAracde since they released the guitar support and icons for it but the game isn't there? Is this another TMNT snafu?

Nope, you can get BBR on XBLA unplugged vol.2 that comes with the new core system.

which basically is pointless if you have already got a 360. icon_sad.gif I so want boom boom rocket

*RANT WARNING*

LOL, IMO XBL is the worst online platform I've ever had to deal with and it should be free too. XBox Live is the reason I've had to start physically removing my 360 from the network. If it's on the network every time I wan't to play offline I cop massive waits and lockups while it tries to connect to XBL over my congested internet connection, that sort of thing should be done asyncronously and only when I actually wan't to do something online damnit! Not to mention I've yet to find a game that'll match me with anyone even close to my skill level.

Then there's the money which if you do play online make the 360 the most expensive console, more so than the PS3, and you get NOTHING for that annual $80 that you cant get for free on pretty much every other only platform out there. There's no dedicated game servers, no meaningfull content, no service improvements, MS don't do any game netcode and only rarely do any updates to their XBL netcode (which adds a little extra overhead and can cause lag from too many non game XBL packets comming in BTW). Then they also charge extra for the content you download, I mean for $80 a year minimum they could at least discount stuff in the market place not that that's really a solution since the same kind of content is distributed for free, legally, on PCs.

I'd much rather my un-intrusive PSN style online implementation than the money sucking, over priced, over hyped pile of garbage that XBL is. As bad as sony suck with their programming I'd still take theirs over what MS make because there are just too many faults with MS products and too few updates to fix them.

*END RANT*

On the other hand at least it doesn't use friend codes, but that's about the only good thing I can say about it.

Thank god for PCs, that's where all the good online players are anyway, I'm sick of playing n00bs who can't even kill me with a controller (btw I suck pretty bad with a controller but somehow still manage to be one of the better, if not best players on a server whenever I play).

*sigh* there is always one.

I don't know what drugs are you smoking but if you have actually invested any time with the PSN or Wii you will see how inferior their offerings are. I would call the PSN store tragic and has hardly any content after a full year in service. That store reminds me of early 1990s when websites where just getting off the ground and had that bulletin-board look.

The most fundamental thing with a online system is voice/messaging and those two systems have yet to implement this system wide (ie accessing a friend's list from anywhere). Have you ever tried tried to organise a game with a friend? I have and I've had to resort to sms/calling them to set it up.

Yes, the PC platform will always be superior due to it's customisation however that is a double edged sword. At least the console offerings are all an integrated network built into the platform. PC gamers have different voice/interfaces for a manner of different games (ie Steam etc).

This will become more of a debate when the PSN actually gets on it's feet and M$ will be pressured to drop the subscription costs. Luckily for M$ it seems they have a bit of time (as Sony is hardly moving at a great pace) and has many reasons to subscribe to the service in the meantime.

In any case, it's hardly the 360s fault you are seeding porn to the community and congesting up your net connection. As for boasting about your skills I'm sure you aren't all that girl.

I disagree Leon. I don't see what XBL offers that justifies *any* subscription fee. There are no dedicated servers, no clan support, no server/game customisation from 3rd parties add-ons like most PC games.

Voice and messaging? Well, a second rate email like service with the crappiest virtual keyboard in existence isn't "messaging" by any stretch. The voice is nice, but again, it's a free service on the PC, so I see no reason why MS should charge for it on top of nickel & dimming everyone for 100x100 pixel avatar images and background "themes" that look like they were made by a 4th grader in MS Paint.

The real reason why XBL gold costs money is quite simple. Power and Control. Microsoft have it, we don't. This is why consoles are inherently bad, with Microsoft and Nintendo being the worse of the three evils. They're closed systems which give monopolistic powers to the vendors. Apple have the same beef, Macs cost more not because their hardware is better than what you'll find on a PC, it costs more because Apple have maintained very rigid control over who can sell hardware that will work with their OS, and that comes at a cost with little benefit to the user. Windows/*nix PCs may appear to have more problems but that has always been the cost of freedom, and any well informed computer user can avoid most of these problems.

XBL should be free. It's just another Cash Cow for Microsoft. I'd be willing to bet my left testie that they're making a sizable profit from the service and that less than 20% of the funds they gather from it are put towards bandwidth costs or to improving the service in any way shape or form.

Stop deluding yourself, you're paying for a service that's sub-par to what PC gamers get for free and no amount of spin is going to change that. It may be better than what Sony or Nintendo have, but the only reason it isn't free is because you don't actually have a choice in the matter, you either pay or you don't play, and there in lies the debauchery that is XBL.

Yes you point is valid and I would agree in some ways. While I would lke to see it free as much as anybody it's hardly sub-par.

However PC gaming is a different beast. While it's more user defined content, there is no standadarisation across the board. I hate that.

Personally I don't want to hack together a team-speak server and all that jazz and with consoles you have it all working out of the box. I'm not technically retarded but I'd rather pay for it out of the box and have it work first time without stuffing around. PC gaming has communities for a single games, Xbox Live is a community for ALL games. I.e. I will play with 'Live' only friends across many games. Mods, I don't care about.

More or less you are paying for 'quality' of service and integration to a global portal. Yes it sucks we are paying for it, but I think it's the best goddamit online platform around and is changing the industry for the better.

With Wii I agree 100% it's just crap, but PSN is well implemented, the first thing that struck me when I browsed the sore was I could browse the store without needing another activity to keep me interested while I waited for it to load (the XBL market place has been improved a little since then but at the time it'd take me an hour or so to find and start a particular download even when the net wasn't busy). PSN certainly is missing a few features that XBL has but I'd rather have the good quality essentials than a whole heap of buggy half-done features that I'm unlikely to use more than once.

I must admit that's one thing microsoft is going in the right direction with, but it's not as good as it should be and I'd also wager very inefficient (especially given how poor MS media formats are). There are also issues with the billions on invites I get to join games or get content for games that I don't even have (in particular Halo 2).

That's not the issue, the problems I have would be fair enough if I was playing or trying to do something that required a net connection. The issue is that I get these problems when I DONT wan't to do something online and it's poorly implemented anyway and should be asyncronous so I can continue doing whatever I want without the console locking up for 10-300 seconds (yes, it actually occasionly locks up for 5 min trying to get some info from XBL which sucks when I'm wanting to play an offline game).

Actually I said I was pretty ****, but it would seem the majority of players on XBL are even worse than me which is really quite dissapointing as I hate easy wins in multiplayer, I'd much rather a hard fought close loss.

It sounds to me like you either have a really slow internet connection or a dodgy console. All these issues you speak of I've never really expirienced.

Also, as for playing against incredibly **** people online, perhaps you haven't been playing long enough. I know especially from Halo 3 onilne (considering it's the only online game I play) that you need to put in a solid ammount of play before you find your level and then you'll stay there...

Also, I hate a close fought loss... infact I hate losing all together lol icon_razz.gif

^ Your lock up problems may not be related to the 360 or Network connection. You may have some routing issues. That is NOT normal behavouir to what you are seeing, I don't even get those problems when I'm shaped.

It's a massive undertaking to implement a global unified network. I'm not sure how Sony is going to keep it free to be honest.

Sony will charge for a premium-level PSN within 12 months. Mark my words.
