Harmonix already working on something new

360 News | ...and it's not a Rock Band sequel!
Harmonix has announced that they are working on a new game at the moment, and for something a little bit different from the usual, it won't require users to play with instrument-shaped controllers, Xboxic reports. So far, very little has been announced about the title, but more will become known at the Game Developer Conference 2008, where Harmonix Senior Designer Chris Foster has been scheduled to do a session on transitioning from an established style into something new and unique.

"Harmonix has established a successful series of “beatmatch” games, where players tap buttons or strum on plastic guitars to “match” the musical “beats” of a series of pre-recorded songs. Their new title faced unique challenges: beats would not be authored by tech-savvy musicians, but would instead be algorithmically generated, and the game would lack the dedicated peripherals that were critical to the success of the Guitar Hero series. This lecture presents a case study of adapting a proven design to new set of constraints. The presenter pries apart the company’s standard beatmatch design, and explores how each element had to evolve, or be discarded, in order to make the new project a success."

Anything new from Harmonix surely can't be a bad thing, we'll have more on this new title as soon as we hear it.

If it's a rhythm game, I'll play it.

It's good of Harmonix to not simply ride the wave of success of their creations. I respect them for challenging themselves to try new things. We rarely see this kind of commitment in the industry anymore. It's about the music, man! The music!

hmmm can't see them making anything besides rhythm games as well. That, and hopefully rock band will just release DLC instead of releasing RB2 etc.

Sounds like Vib Ribbon. If so I hope they somehow procedurally generate backgrounds to suit the music, much as I loved Vib Ribbons style it got kind of repetitive, and something like Guitar Hero's style wouldn't work either as it most likely wouldn't have the breadth of styles to fit in with a breadth of music genres. Of course something like Frequency/Amplitude would be suitable (in fact it could be a continuation of that series considering what we know so far), where it doesn't really matter as you're just focused on being on the correct path.
