Halo 3 smashes digital entertainment sales records

360 News | Over 50,000 copies sold by the end of the first day.
Microsoft has announced that sales for Halo 3 have broken all existing entertainment launch records for first day sales in Australia. Halo 3 had been the fastest pre-selling game in history and by the end of the first day of sale more than 50,000 copies of the game had sold.

Consumers spent more than $6 million in just 24 hours, which makes Halo 3 the biggest first day digital entertainment release ever in Australia. This success was repeated in the US, where Microsoft says Halo 3 was the biggest entertainment launch in US history, garnering an estimated US$170 million (AU$195 million) in sales in the first 24 hours. It beat previous records set by blockbuster movie releases like Spider-Man 3 and novels such as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

David McLean, Xbox Director, says, “We are thrilled with the success of Halo 3 in Australia, and with the fact that a quarter of all Xbox 360 owners rushed out to buy Halo 3 on day one. Along with the recent price drop, we hope the success of ‘Halo 3’ will consolidate the Xbox 360’s market leading position.”

Pretty impressive considering the amount of 360's in Australia is less than that of the original Xbox at the time of the Halo 2 launch.

Now, that the series is finished. Well, apart from the RTS spin-off, Halo Wars, it looks like Microsoft may have to invest in another series to make some money in the games department.

Halo will be back. Halo 2 broke this record, Halo 3 has done it again, and when has anyone seen Microsoft back away from a proven money-maker? The trilogy is complete, and it might be a few years, but there's no way that franchise (as an FPS) is done.

Prequels anyone?

I think it's time for the film studio's to allow Peter Jackson and Neil Blomkamp to finally get the film adaptation filmed, sealed and delivered.

I'm actually very excited to see where they take the game after Halo 3. Could be very awesome.

I was one of the 50000 caught up in the hype. lol and I dont even like the first two games. Nothing against them just not me. I am very particular about the sound and I dont think they got it right. It appears detached from the players on multiplayer. Anyway will play occassionally.

Well the next games so far is
-Halo Wars (The RTS 360 Game based around the arrival of the Covenant to the Destruction of Reach)
-Untitled Halo Project (Which Peter Jackson will assist in the making)
Hopefully they do a prequel like The Spartans on Reach or The War between The Elites and The Brutes.
