TGS 07: Lost Odyssey to span four disks

360 News | Now that's a lot of disks.
Tokyo Game Show, Hironobu Sakaguchi has revealed to IGN that Lost Odyssey will come with four disks. The game lasts around 40 to 50 hours, and utilises a mixture of CG and real time cut scenes, but this means the game data takes up at least twenty to twenty five gigabytes.

Purists will also be pleased to know that Lost Odyssey will ship with multiple language options, including English and Japanese. Lost Odyssey is set for release in Japan in December, with PAL regions set to hopefully get the game early next year.

PS3/Blu-Ray fanboys 'I told you so' comments ensue..

No seriously, I don't get why they still use CGI cutscenes when these consoles are capable of fantastic visuals. Do it all real-time I say..

Indeed. Next gen consoles should have no excuse for using CGI cutscenes.

I prefer my CGI over real-time for my epic cut scenes. One of the reasons I love Square-Enix, plus helps with making music videos.

yeah CGI is what i would prefer, especially for the climax parts. But damn spanning over 4 discs.. I guess we'll get to see how the 360 users who claimed it won't matter if there are multiple discs will take it in, just hope it won't go chewing up one disc making the rest of the set useless.

Can't imagine a Final Fantasy or other Square game without epic, CGI cut scenes. I daresay that was one thing that heavily contributed to my adoration of the atmosphere, story and characters of Final Fantasy VIII.

Still, 4 discs, who cares- like, one change every 8 hours. Boo hoo.

Did anyone here pick up Blue Dragon?

Blue Dragon is 3 discs and, seriously, the disc changing is NO issue whatsoever. Do we all cry when we have to change discs for different games in one session? Of course not!

25 gig? Sounds like 1 single layer Blu-Ray if i'm not mistaken. Disc changing might not be a big deal to some, but it is for me. It's not a deal breaker or anything but I would prefer no more disc swapping.

Also the day CGI/FMV is no longer in games should be the day the visuals themselves actually rival FMV/CGI. FMV/CGI is like my fave thing in games, it's my ultimate reward....it's like a movie version of the game and it's of the highest quality and fyi it's the most expensive part of any game....by a long shot actually. So don't write it off as some tacky add-on....I guarantee there are a lot of people that wouldn't even be playing games if it weren't for FMV. I've been playing games since there have been video games (pong, pac man etc) and I can safely say it is easily what I look foward to the most when playing.

I also love finishing a segment of a game and being 'rewarded' with a CGI film as ugh said.

I agree. While one disc is nicer, I really don't care if there are four. playing through Blue Dragon's three has been a non-issue. As long as the game is designed around NOT having to reinsert a disc for an area it's fine. I would rather have 4 discs full of FMZ then have 1 disc with real-time scenes.

I kind of like having more discs in a sick way. Feels like your getting more icon_wink.gif

CGI used sparingly can be nice, but when it's over saturation of cgi, like a 5 min straight movie intro or cutscene, they can end up making going back to playing the game with real time graphics particulary jarring.

It's not such an issue with today's gen as most games in game graphics are 'good enough' to soften the blow going back to playing with them after seeing a purttyyy cutscene.......but man, i don't know how you guys did it with the final fantasy games, on ps2 and especially ps1.Eww.

For my opinion on SONY, refer to Maddox's fifth last post regarding SONY and their treatment of Liksang icon_lol.gif ... But ... as far as Blueray is concerned, you'd be ignorant to not say that a "larger" format disc would not be of benefit to gamers. We X360 people are going to slowly suffer. Look at the budgets of some of these games, you're kidding yourself if you think that in a years time, developers aren't going to be commenting on these multi million dollar games forced to sacrifice on content or quality to go on one DVD DL disc, or go back to Amiga 500 days, playing The Legend of Kyrandia and swapping 9 floppys every time something exciting is going to happen (Ahh the old days). That's not to say that SONY have made the right descision, they have suffered low sales due to this "benefit" of their machine. SONY is correct when they say that the Blue ray is ahead of its time, because the time that people will be able to afford them is NOT YET.

On the CGI/FMV debate, one word ... MAFIA.

Now there's a game that's in game cutscenes made me puke, I never got any story because the constant depth issues with the characters eyelids was too distracting, a clear case for FMV icon_smile.gif

Still that's not to say that FMV is always better but for epic games it **** all over in-game cinematics since it allows you to show things the engine can't handle and you get a good stable fps despite how much action there is.

The FF series handled it well since they used mainly in-game cut scenes but for the more complex/important ones they used FMVs icon_smile.gif.
