What has made the previous Midnight Club titles so enjoyable has been the seamless way in which you can jump into races, and once again players will be able to spontaneously enter a race in Midnight Club: Los Angeles by simply flashing their lights at an opponent. Despite the fact that the game is set in Los Angeles, the Rockstar San Diego team hasn't recreated LA perfectly, instead choosing to piece together its own perfect Los Angeles. This should mean that those with an eagle eye will see Los Angeles landmarks such as Sunset Boulevard, and maybe even the Hollywood Walk of Fame will make it into the game. The game's version of Los Angeles won't be small, however; Rockstar has stated that the area is the same size of the three cities combined from Midnight Club III: DUB Edition.
The game will also include a new damage system. Damage your vehicle here, and your car's performance will suffer, but you'll still be allowed to keep driving. If you do bang up your car in the middle of a race, you'll be able to select a quick fix option at the end. The quick fix option won't repair you vehicle completely, but it will at least improve the car a little. You'll also be able to take the vehicle back for a full repair, which may be the option you have to take if you've driven really recklessly.
Every street racing game released in the past few years has had some kind of reputation system, and Midnight Club: Los Angeles is no different. As you race you'll earn reputation points, while the position you place in a race will determine how many points you get. The reputation points are essential, as some races will only be playable if you have the required number of points.
Midnight Club: Los Angeles will once again include both cars and motorbikes. Unfortunately, Rockstar hasn't revealed the full vehicle roster, so all we know at the moment is that three vehicles will make it into the game: the 2006 Mitsubishi 3000GT, a 1969 Mustang 302 Boss, and a 2006 Lamborghini Gallardo Roadster.
In terms of gameplay modes, Rockstar is keeping its lips sealed on what we should expect. The game will include some form of online play, and we wouldn't be surprised if the reputation points became a key component of online play, but we're waiting for Rockstar to confirm more details on the multiplayer elements of the game at the moment.
Overall though, it seems Midnight Club: Los Angeles is definitely a title to keep an eye on. The previous Midnight Club titles have been thoroughly enjoyable, and all indications are that this game won't buck that particular trend.
