Thompson has issues with BioShock advertising

360 News | Advertising in the wrong timeslot.
Jack Thompson, the controversial Miami attorney gunning for G-rated games, has set his sights on the BioShock advertising that aired in the US during WWE Smackdown. What started out as a single post on GamePolitics has turned into a complaint mailed to the Federal Trade Commission.

Thompson claims that as the advertising screened in a teen-demographic heavy timeslot, Take Two is guilty of deliberately marketing mature games to underage players. Talking of the timeslot, Thompson said, "A check of the demographics of the audience of that program reveals that teens under 17 years of age watch that program in huge numbers…"

He continued, "Remarkably, the video game industry is running ads for games like BioShock on teen-intensive television programs while at the same time its industry-captured 'watchdog,' the ESRB, is running a self-congratulatory ad campaign to assure parents that the video game ratings system is working and that the industry can be trusted not to target their kids with these Mature-rated games. It is all a lie, as the BioShock ads prove."

Drawing a link between this action and the behaviours of the tobacco industry, he then used the occurrence to show why he believes the current rating system isn't working. Explaining, he said, "This rampant fraudulent trade practice is precisely what 'Big Tobacco' did with its 'Joe Camel' and other teen-targeting ads, while at the same time lying to Congress that it was not marketing its adult product to kids."

So far, despite Thompson's blustering, it appears to be much ado about nothing. However, given the emotionally confronting violence in BioShock and the easily misinterpreted role of Little Sisters within the game, it remains to be seen whether he'll take things further, possibly trying to turn it into another Grand Theft Auto.

No?.. I don't think demographics is a factor, you do.

But you have to ask 'who's the target audience?' for the two shows?
I disagree that it is relevant icon_smile.gif

I find it funny he's complaining about Advertising a Mature Game on a Professional Wrestling Show.

Frankly, I think people would listen more if he actually built a proper argument, I mean, I'd be more concerned if they were advertising it during an Episode of Bananas In Pyjamas or something.

So it's ok for the teenagers to watch the voilence in the wrestling but not in bioshock?

There's a big difference between advertising a Mature rated game during a show whose prime demographic is teenagers and intentionally advertising to children, which I thought was what we were supposed to be concerned about? Take Bioshock, which has (or will have) an MA15+ rating here in Australia: I could be wrong... but aren't there only 2 teenage years below 15? So even if 100% of the demographc were teenagers (13-19), 70% of those are legally entitled to purchase and play the game.

If you're talking about the US, it's even more nonsensical. If a parent is allowing their child to watch wrestling, then they obviously consider them mature enough to make their own decisions regarding what games they want to play. I guess that's giving parents and teenagers too much credit? I forget we're all braindead morons sometimes...

Besides which, if it's wrong to show advertising at these times, shouldn't he be going after the TV networks for allowing the game to be advertised at an inappropriate timeslot? Oh wait... That would make sense. I forgot who we were discussing for a minute there. icon_smile.gif

EDIT: Okay, I just re-read the complaint, and it's not that the prime demographic is "teenagers", but rather (under 17).. Which gives us a 50/50 split, rather than the 70/30 I calc'd. That's still pretty good, isn't it? I'm sure alcohol ads are played during shows with less than a 50/50 split between those who are legally allowed to buy it... Why should games be different?

But remember the violence in Wresting isn't real and purely for entertainment purposes where as in Bioshock it's... uh, well it's... um... underwater?

Oh and +1 for banning JT news stories.

I think Thompson's argument is actually relevent, as demonstrated in this Internet Relay Chat transcript:

A13x: Wrestling is manly, fun for the kids, and a good influence
A13x: even Artistic
DeathFalcon: <mechmeister> Mitch: yeah, IM A WHORE
Cro: just like Bioshock
A13x: Bioshock is VIOLENT
Cro: everything is fine
Cro: I know A13x
A13x: and rotting the minds of our children
Cro: not sure it's a game for me
A13x: Cro: LETS WRASSLE!
Cro: get your tights on!
A13x: Ok, done!
A13x: Now get on the floor
Cro: Cause there's a HurriCro coming through!!
A13x: OH! That tickles!
Cro: put that away!

OH NO!!! Poor Jack Thompson, quick everyone, lets make a petition to stop Bioshock from coming out, Jack Thompson has spoken*!!

*The above comment was completely sarcastic, do not under any circumstances support Jack Thompson, he is a stupid jerk with no life. Adults should be able to play video games as well.

I rest my case.

Er.. advertising doesn't correlate with allowing adults to play the game.

Please feel free to stop resting invalid cases.

So, back to that Thompson guy and his views on the Bioshock advertising hey?

First he's attacking games, now he's attacking advertising. Soon he'll be attacking Televisions for showing the advertising and gaming claiming its the work of the devil.

Have a read of the article. His argument isn't against the "evils of advertising", it's about (perceived) misdirected advertising to an inappropriate market.

There's also constant propaganda ads running amok on US TV all the time, encouraging people young and old to join the army and demonizing so-called threats.

But Bioshock is worse.
