Xbox 360 Australian price dropped

360 News | Core console now the same price as the Wii.
Microsoft has confirmed to Gamespot that the price of the Xbox 360 in Australia will drop from today. The 20GB enabled Pro system will now retail for $579.95 Australian, and the Core console will drop in price to $399.95, which makes it the same price as the Nintendo Wii.

Xbox regional director for Australia and New Zealand David McLean said reduced manufacturing costs were the reason for dropping the Xbox 360's price. McLean stated the price drop positions the Pro system favourably against the PlayStation 3 whilst the Core's pricepoint allows the console to compete in the casual market.

"I think you'll see, on a games point of view, we're well ahead (of the PS3). And now once again we're offering all of these experiences at a really affordable price. So I think we will do really well during the holiday period against PlayStation," McLean said. "Our strategy was always to focus on the core and serious gamers. We think we've done a great job there, and the numbers support that. What we now need to do is start thinking about broadening our strategy, and this price movement is a component of that strategy."

McLean reaffirmed the Xbox Core would be sticking around as well. "There are no plans to discontinue the Core SKU. We've actually seen over the last few months that the Core has started to grow in terms of sales. We're pretty pleased with the momentum that's been building on the Core, and it's still important for us to provide that level of choice to the customer. We have no intention of discontinuing the Core at this point. Furthermore, this price adjustment and some of things we're planning to do with the product over the holidays will make it a more significant part of the business," he stated.

hmm... I might have to join in on some Wii60 action soon. However much I'm a Nintendo fan, there is still the graphics whore inside of me, and Live looks great too. Also all of the great games I'm missing out on, ie. GTAIV and Halo 3.

If there are some awesome deals around June next year I might really consider getting one.

Wii doesn't need to change it's price, it may be $400 but you get Wii Sports with it, in-built wireless and in-built mem.
I'm not sure, a lot of people who played my wii seem skeptical on buying it. I reckon a price cut could convince them. But I wouldnt go far as calling Wii great value for money. It does what it does best at being fun.

IMO, a 360 or PS3 is needed to complement the Wii. Its not a graphics issue...the matter of the fact is that a lot of facets of content, detail, gameplay mechanics and the such cannot be done on the Wii.

The Wii will never let you play games similar in essence to Bioshock, GTAIV, Warhawk, Strangehold and HalfLife2.

Well if you loved the Gamecube for its graphics and capabilities but also its game franchises, then I think the Wii can only please you if one of the other 2 were there to compliment it. Funnily enough I like the Wii more now that I have the PS3.

Is the Core system actually HD capable? Can I buy separate cables, or does it have no port for them?

I've been waiting for the Elite, but if I can just buy a Core system and a 120 gig Harddrive for cheaper and get the same thing I won't have to.

The Core is HD capable. You get can the Core to be exactly the same as the Pro/Premium except for the silver DVD tray door. Hard drive, cables etc can all be bought separately.

walked past Game - Knox and they had premiums for $519!! (but is said it lasted till 19/08/07)

Harvey Norman is advertising Premium @ $529

People will also find that the RRP on the remaining Forza 2 bundles would have dropped to $629 so as has been previously said, the clothing stores will be further gutting the price on their stock...

... if they get price protected icon_razz.gif

let the gutting of consoles begin again

That's why I'm waiting for 2009 when RE5 comes out. Hopefully then the pro will be down to a reseasonable price. Then I can get me some Assassin's Creed and GTA4 action, while getting games like Lost Planet and Dead Rising I enjoyed playing before. I'm not interested in Halo 3 or Bioshock or those kinds, not my type of game.

Looks like I spoke too soon. As soon as the 360 price dropped, the bundles dropped with it. The deal at Kmart for $599 with a game became $538 with a game.

The Wii was always meant to be a secondary console, which is why Nintendo knew they didn't need to wow people with flashy graphics and advanced physics or AI... or even a good online service. We already have those with the 360/PS3, and non-gamers don't know any better. A lot of those features are wasted on casual gamers (the ones that don't know the PS3 has Blu-ray, for example), and they're more concerned about price, while hardcore gamers are more likely to go for the cheaper option which provides the most unique games.

wow - $538 is definitely going to be hard to resist.

At 400 for the core there's no reason not to buy one, then worry about the HD later.

^ I'd pay the $138 more to get to premium with a game. Either way it's a good price now, just in time for a big few months of releases for the 360.

It all depends on how much the 120GB HDD is, if it's only around 2-250 then I'd get the core, and the HDD later. Again, all depends on how it stacks up, when I've got the money to burn I'll look into it further and see what the best avenue is. It'd either be core or elite though, I hate having small, useless, harddrives lying around (I have enough of them as it is).

well, wireless controllers would be a definite for me now as i've now got nowhere in my recently renovated area to negotiate cables anymore.

therefore, premium would be a must.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the wireless controllers. Elite it is then.

Any price drop is positive - the more bums on seats the more developers & publishers will invest in game content, the more content hitting the street the greater the competition to lift quality. Hope the others follow the lead and reset their pricing soon.

500GB Hard Drives are at the sweet spot right now, about $200. Heat might be a problem though?

the elite has the HDD, plus the headset, wireless BLACK controller, looks good and probably more I have missed all for the same price

That's for 3.5" desktop drives.

The Xbox 360 uses 2.5" laptop drives.
