360 update to prepare for wireless guitars

360 News | That's it, really. For now.
If you noticed your 360 getting an update, searched everything exhaustively, and couldn't find anything new at all, don't worry. You're not alone. Major Nelson explained recently that the update does nothing more than prepare the system for the wireless guitars due to be released with Guitar Hero 3.

Guitar Hero II players were never very happy about being tethered while jamming. Apparently due to Microsoft's unwillingness to share their proprietary wireless communications protocol, Red Octane was forced to make their Xbox 360 Guitar Hero II axe wired. However, it's now well known that Microsoft's been a bit more willing to play better with others, and that Guitar Hero III will feature a wireless guitar. Looking fairly spiffy, it'll apparently even feature removable faceplates for further customisation.

Still, a fairly innocuous update overall. However, the Major Nelson launch team also stated that they're gearing up for a more major update later this year as part of their biannual release schedule. Specific features weren't announced, but the last major updated delivered in May provided some fairly substantial functionality improvements including Instant Messaging support, improved achievement reporting, the Xbox LIVE Marketplace blade, and improved power management capabilities.

Assuming a six month window between releases, we may be able to expect the next major update sometime around November, only a few months away.

I thought the GHII guitar was wireless, and the patch released for that was conking out a whole bunch of Xbox360s?

I've been holdiing off on GH until a wireless controller was released. My TV and longue room is way to big to have a wired controller. I do believe I will be jumping in via GH3 icon_smile.gif

Nah, the GH2 controllers for 360 are all wired - the patch that was causing problems addressed a issue with the whammy bar that affected many of the guitars.

Pretty stupid to make everyone update just for wireless guitars and thats it, should've prompted people to update when they actually need the guitar. At least fix up the msn issue already.
