August Xbox 360 price cut

360 Rumour | US only? Looks that way ...
While this still needs to be classified as a rumour, it's a bit more concrete than most. Scans of various US catalogs have surfaced over the last week showing discounts on all three Xbox 360 systems (Core, Premium, Elite). The Premium gets the lion's share, with a US$50 (AU$58 / £25) drop, while the Core and Elite benefit slightly less, with drops of US$20 (AU$23 / £10) and US$30 (AU$35 / £15) respectively.

The price drop is expected on August 12th and appears to have been "confirmed" via catalog price scans for Circuit City, Best Buy, Wal-Mart, and Toys R US. Microsoft has unsurprisingly refused to comment on the rumour, stating that, "Nothing's changed since last week." In PR-speak, that's a pretty big allowance for wriggle room.

Sadly, don't get your hopes up for a similar discount in the UK. Speaking to Computer and Videogames, Microsoft's official position was, "We're very happy with the price we're at, and have no plans to make any changes at this time." While Australia may yet get lucky, it's probably not worth holding your breath.

Other rumours also suggest that the Core model is likely to be discontinued in the US, with Best Buy having marked the model as "out of stock". Microsoft has previously denied this, stating, "No. Xbox 360 Core remains an important member of the Xbox 360 family." However, as with the circle of life, all things must eventually end. Maybe it's time for the Core to visit the great NES in the sky.

i wouldn't still buy the xbox even if it was a Dollar. seriously.
But it would be smart for MS to go ahead with this. I think they'll need it so they can get more people buying xbox's now than later because later the PLaystation will be getting a price cut... i hope.

Well MS are going to have to do something soon in Aus since the PS3 has just come out with the Starter Pack but I guess they will probably just hold out for a Halo 3 bundle

So you don't like gaming in general then? Because there isn't much on the PS3 to play atm.

No not really. I only play like once a week. My PSP keeps me busy on the road. But at home i play Motostorm and Resistance when i can. But i have been waiting for the upcoming months for the big games.

If there was a pricecut i'm sure it would be universal or at least UK, America and Australia. Don't forget at the moment even the US part of Microsoft is claiming they are 'very happy' with the price.

I hope you're right Luke.. I'm holding out on the 360 until these price drop rumours die off or are confirmed, and until they start releasing consoles with 65nm CPUs (which I hope is before Halo 3.. icon_sad.gif)

But considering I was going to get a 360 for $520 the other day (Premium) will $58 AUD off the RRP really make a difference to the real street price?

Out of interest what does nm actually mean? And what amount of nm is the current 360 chip?

I do question much the 360's reliability will improve with these chips. I know people who've aired their 360's plenty, even bought a fan for them and still got the 3 red rings of death. Clearly there is much more wrong with the 360 than just temperature.

nanametres.
the current chips are 90nm.

the theory is that the 65nm chips won't runs so hot, therefore the fans required won't need to be as big/fast, and therefore the motion shouldn't be as vigorous, therefore the soldering (which alledgedly accounts for most RROD problems) shouldn't be shaken as much, and should withstand normal use better - ie: the soldering won't crack.

i don't actually know what are measured to give the 90/65nm rating. i'm assuming it's the thickness of "wires" within the chips themselves. (sorry, i don't know the technical term for the pathways within the chips, so "wire" is the best i can come up with.)

Ah thanks, great explanation.
