Resident Evil 5 protagonist confirmed

360 News | "Hope this is not Chris's blood."
Famitsu Magazine has revealed a few tidbits regarding Capcom's upcoming Resident Evil 5, including one that many of us had already assumed. Yes, Chris Redfield is back, and he's going where Leon has gone before in the continuing war against the "not-zombies," (though in this case, they're "not-Ganados" either).

The game picks up Chris's story approximately 10 years after the mansion incident in the original game. The ex-S.T.A.R.S. member is now working for an organization known as the BSAA and is on a special assignment in... whatever country the trailer showed turns out to be. Producer Jun Takeuchi explained that the game's story will fill in some details on Chris's past as well as "things that were not resolved in Resident Evil 4." Whilst the game will utilise RE4's gameplay style, it will also include new features that Takeuchi wasn't prepared to comment on.

One feature he did elaborate on was the importance light and darkness play in the game. "For example, as Chris enters a building, his eyes has to gradually adjust to the dark indoors. The same can be said with the opposite where stepping out from a dark place would cause glare to his eyes." This could turn out to be a very unsettling experience, as enemies could be even less visible leaping out at you upon exiting a building than in a darkened corridor. Takeuchi also added, "The enemies this time are not zombies nor are they Los Ganados either, but are quite smart, human-like creatures. One of the main theme in this game is that Chris is fighting for a cause that is not really clear. Is he fighting for good or evil?" Whatever he's fighting for, count us in.

Cool, playing RES4 on Wii atm & loving it. Lights off of course!

light and dark thing seems cool..
wonder if you'll use the six-axis to dodge things jumping out at you when your 'eyes' are adjusting

Hoping that I can win the G1 Jockey comp, then I can play RE4 on Wii!
I'm really looking forward to this game, but lets have some zombies in RE6. In the meantime, if you feel under-prepared for a zombie invasion, here are some pointers.

I think it was quite obvious to many that the protagonist was going to be Chris, unless they were planning to have him with a long lost twin brother or something.

It's finally good to see the RE games keeping aspects of their previous title while adding new ones. I mean it was pretty silly how in Code Veronica you had to press a button to ascend/descend stairs while in RE 3 you could just walk up them automatically.

^ It's cuz Code Veronica was in full 3d, whereas in the previous titles the backgrounds were all pre-rendered while characters/enemies, objects and items were the only things in 3d. Basically the change to the 3d engine would've brought with it some new complications and I guess that was one of them.

Man i'm so happy Capcom have continued this series and i'm even happier they spend so much time and care with it. Honestly if I had become fanatic about most other franchises I would've probably become disappointed with it at some stage (e.g. prince of persia games, splinter cell games) but Resident Evil has gotten better and better with each iteration. I hope they have an update to Resident Evil 2 in the works because it would be so awesome if that got the Resident Evil remake treatment.

The 3 G's, it's the code which determines my gaming preferences and Resident Evil is it! Guns, Gore and Girls!

Thanks for pointing that out ugh because I never really thought of that. I guess I assumed that it was just a little programming detail that wasn't taken care of.

I played the RE games out of order. I only bought a PS1 in 1999 and one of the first games I bought was RE3, then 2 and then the original. I really enjoyed all of them. I wasn't ecstatic about Code Veronica but I didn't think it was totally worthless either. RE4 was just a different experience altogether and it was a much needed change too.

As for the Splinter Cell games, I've found all of them to be an enjoyable experience. But that's just because I'm a Splinter Cell nut icon_biggrin.gif, not to mention a Silent Hill freak!

For me Resident Evil 1 was a completely epic experience. I bought the Playstation when it originally came out (in NZ) and was playing games for a while, anyways at school there was this guy in the year above....he was Korean and filthy rich and I used to talk to him about PS1 games and stuff....anyways he told me every year he used to go to Japan (forget why) and if I wanted he would bring me back some games (yea free of charge! I was amazed!) anyways he was talking about some zombie game that was supposed to be like a horror movie (with graphics to boot!) and if I wanted he would get me that.....basically the moment he described to me what it might be like I was salivating at the prospect.

So he goes overseas and comes back with like 100 games and again I was amazed....anyways he told me the standout game in the pile was something called Biohazard...the game he told me about before he left.

That night my mate Chris and I got picked up by him in this huge 4wd and he drove us to his (parents) mansion (yes mansion and this was the 1st time I had seen something like this let alone actually go to one)...anyways I couldn't believe my eyes and we went into this huge loungeroom with all these white speakers everywhere which I thought looked extra tacky (they were bose though....I rember that clearly cuz..) but when he turned them on they nearly blew me off my feet! Anyways i'd brought my Playstation around (for some reason he didn't have one at the time...again forget why) anyways we put the Biohazard disc in after I showed him a couple of my games and it wouldn't work! I was mortified....but he told me he might have asolution so we did this weird 'matchstick trick' (that's what we ended up calling it) where you prop the button and lid at the back with a matchstick and you load up a pal game and before the PS logo would disappear you had to quickly swap it with the NTSC disc....anyways he did it and it worked!! WoOhOo!! BUT....the game loaded up in black and white and everything was in Japanese....again mortified but he'd already tried it out overseas so he showed me a couple of the basics.....anyways I sat there playing with my eyes glued to the tv (despite it being black and white and the fact that I was chomping down all the herbs willy nilly not knowing what they did etc....only knew the green one gave health back but I couldn't see their colours anyways so green, blue, red I was just chomping 'em)...anyways we ended up getting up to the snake that night and it was then when I almost had a stroke and knew exactly what they meant by next-gen (or whatever we called it back then). Anyways I didn't play it much when I took it home because I wanted to play it properly in english and colour etc but honestly that night had a lasting impact on me (the real mansion he owned really helped with the spooky/unknown/unexplored atmosphere) and it's why Resident has become my fave series ever.

Very interesting indeed, problem is for me, you don't want the enemy to be TOO smart.

The entire point was meant to be zombies but the Ganados turned out really well. I think somewhere between the two would be a nice sweet spot.

I had a theory that somehow the Ganados and whoever are the enemies in RE5 were the product of Umbrella's competitor and were trying to one up Umbrella by making them more controllable than the zombies were.

Oh and ugh, thanks for your post that was very interesting!

Awesome story ugh! Danger! 50,000 Zombies is ideal viewing for fans of the zombie genre and Simon Pegg & co. His Aussie accent is quite convincing at times and the ocker phrases he uses are a crack up. Props to go Pegg for doing his research. Essential reading comes in the form of The Zombie Survival Guide & World War Z; both of which are written by Max Brooks and are a fantastic read.

I have Resident Evil 4 Collector's sitting in my Gamecube collection but I am yet to play it. I want to finish Code Veronica first before I chomp into RE 4. I just hope they bring out Resident Evil 5 on the Wii!

*snip*
my first RE experience was similar. my neighbour imported a PS1 on release and imported Biohazard on release, and i remember him being on the phone while playing, still had the sound up while me and another mate were watching.

he walked down a hall and

ZOMBIE DOBERMAN JUMPING THROUGH THE WINDOWS!

i think we probably scared eachother through jumping more than the game did.
that was also the first time i ever heard my mate swear - he dropped the phone and had to then explain why he'd done so to the person on the other end.

i like the light and dark thing. HL2 had it on full effects, but it didn't really alter the gameplay in any way. i suppose in HL2E1 when you're waiting for the elevator in the dark, the gun-flashes would "burn" images on the screen when it returns to black.

^ Hehe yea that doberman part. I had this other asian friend (Thong Thai Ly...no sh!t that was his name) and me and him used to always trade pc games....anyways I told him to come around and play this Biohazard game and so he did, anyways I knew he was a bit high strung so I wanted to scare him so I basically set him up for the doberman part and handed him the controls...he walked about 2 steps, screamed and threw my controller across the room. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. icon_sad.gif

Can't wait. After becoming a convert to the series with RE4 on Gamecube RE5 has become my most anticipated next gen game by far.
