Universe at War to feature new achievement functionality

360 News | Power up!
In a novel twist on the use of achievements in-game, Universe at War is apparently to offer actual performance boosts as rewards for obtaining achievements.

Ars Technica had a chance to sit down with Petroglyph's Universe at War Producer, Designer, and Composer at E3 for a detailed run-through of the still under development game.

Where achievements, a Microsoft created gamerpoints system, simply provide bragging rights for gamers in most games, Universe takes a significantly different approach. In what is a first, they will actually have inherent worth in the game and obtaining them will actually give gamers real-world benefits. Unlocking different achievements will allow the gamer to wear "medals", each of which will provide various game bonuses including ability powerups in both single-player mode and multiplayer.

Explaining the concept, Petroglyph stated, "It could be plus five to armor, plus five to damage, or plus five to ability recharge." To keep multiplayer fair, player will also be able to disable medals prior to joining the game. Microsoft was apparently very interested and supportive of the concept, suggesting that this may eventually become the new model for achievements in most games.

Petroglyph also developed Star Wars: Empire at War, an above average RTS. Universe at War is to feature races apparently built from the ground up to be totally different and a different approach to in-game technology management, offering gamers the ability to change strategies on the fly by moving back down the technology tree to re-specialise their forces in a different area. Universe at War is being developed for Vista, XP, and Xbox 360, and is intended to use Live functionality on both 360 and PC, including cross-platform multiplayer.

So how does this differ from game 'X' where you get an achievement for finding the stone of fire for example then having magic enabled because of it? Or X amount of kills rank you up enabling you to unlock new weapons ala BF2 or armour like in Rainbow6 vegas.

I can understand if there are heaps of them for 0 points which is achievable but still, it just sounds bizarre.

^ EXACTLY!!! (basically what I was gonna say). It's like every other game....for example in Crackdown when you collect all the agility orbs you unlock an achievement but by collecting all the orbs you powered up your character, so just because this Universe at War game is tying all it's achievements (or whatever) to things where you actually powerup doesn't change a damn thing.

I wonder if there will be an achievement called,"You have started up the game!"
Which unlocks the ability to play the game.

Rofl! Spot on guys, this is the same old mechanic that has been used in many a game before. You find secret items/meet requirements and you get better abilities/items/bonus material. The only thing vaguely new about this is that it's tied in directly with achievements (which has been done before too, to a lesser degree).

It really depends on what the achievements are like.

For progress-based achievements (things like 'Complete Chapter 3', 'Collect all the Power Stones', or anything else that you'd either do anyway or is already tied to power development in the game) this is really no different than the way it's been done before. There's not much difference in getting a new ability from collecting power stone because they make you level up, or because they fulfill an achievement.

Where it does make a difference is for skill- or vanity-based achievements. Things like 'perform a 150 hit combo', or 'Complete Chapter 3 using only the handgun'. There have been a few cases where that sort of thing has yielded been used to unlock extras and cheats (Insomniac's Skill Point system comes to mind), but nothing with the sort of direct game effects they're talking about here and certainly nothing that plugged into the vast attraction that achievements have.

In a way it's the next logical step for achievements to take, especially with on-line gaming becoming more prevalent. Now your 150-hit combo doesn't just give you bragging rights, it can directly contribute to your performance.
