Regardless of how copies were downloaded, the question remains, is Texas Hold ‘Em any good? Well, if you were hoping for a host of different poker options such as playing different forms, including five-card stud of seven-card draw, then you’re looking in the wrong place. The only variant that you’ll find here is good ol’ Texas hold ‘em. Since it’s probably the easiest form to play, it would probably also end up being the most popular anyway.
There are essentially three ways to play in Texas Hold ‘Em, with two single player modes and a host multiplayer modes. In the single player, you’re given a bankroll and its up to you to play in tournaments that you can afford and win your way up to having a much larger bankroll. However, it’s not hard to lose the lot. You also have seven single player challenges that place you in a variety of scenarios and it’s up to you to either take advantage or fight back. Both these modes work reasonably well, thanks to some passable AI. They’re not great but for the most part, they aren’t cheap.
While it may seem standard, the fact that the game has online multiplayer is really appreciated. Otherwise, it would have been a complete waste of time. Players can participate in either ranked or unranked matches, as well as matches where they will put their personal bankroll at stake. The online games are slightly slower paced, obviously because real players aren’t going to be as quick as the computer.
The interface is surprisingly intuitive and simple. Even though you’re confined to the pad, a few quick keys have been added to make things such as increasing your bet much simpler. The result is a fluent and fast game of poker. While the game will provide just as much, even possibly more than full retail priced games such as the World Championship Poker series, the deal was so much sweeter when it was free. 800 points is probably a little too much given the contents of the package. Maybe 400 would have been a more appropriate price.
Both the graphical and sound presentations are very basic. You can change the colour of your table and the angle from which you’re looking from but otherwise, your left with a game that isn’t much more than a flash title. Still, it plays smoothly, the card scans are readable and it gets the job done. Sound effects are incredibly basic and there is one seedy tune that plays through out.
Texas Hold ‘Em is a serviceable game of poker for the Xbox 360, which will get the job done over retail counterparts if a game of Texas hold ‘em is all that you’re after. Otherwise, the price is a tad steep for what is on offer. That is, unless you can get seven friends together that know how to play the game and then you’ve just lost a fair few hours out of your life. Still, those who got it while it was free would be the happiest with for the time being.
