Pre E3 2007: Virtua Fighter 5 goes Live

360 News | But that's not all...
It has been known for sometime that one of our favourite PS3 titles, Virtua Fighter 5, will be coming to the Xbox 360 later this year. It was also assumed that this time, the game would come with an online mode. This has finally been officially confirmed - Virtua Fighter 5 will go online, but what's even more exciting, this isn't the only addition to the Xbox 360 version.

The 360 version will have support for both the analog stick and the d-pad, as well as rumble, which was obviously missed from the PS3. The Quest mode is said to have been improved as well, with many more opponents and objects to find. Customised characters can be used online as well. To facilitate the online play, DOJO mode has had leaderboards and improved training regimes added. Competing online will also allow players to earn money to purchase items from the in-game shop.

“For a lot of very good reasons, Virtua Fighter™ 5 is regarded as the deepest and most revered fighting game available on next generation consoles”, said Gary Knight, European Marketing Director, SEGA Europe. “Bringing Virtua Fighter™ 5 to the Xbox 360™ will not only capture an entirely new audience, but will allow gamers to show their Virtua Fighter™ skills online against friends and foes”.

Virtua Fighter 5 is looking at a release in the not to distant future. Please stay tuned to PALGN, as we'll bring you more as we get it.

Oh so everything that was said about Virtua Fighter being such a precise game that current online gaming is too laggy for it was all bullcrap? Thought so.

In any case I wouldn't bother playing any fighting game with the hopeless 360 d-pad let alone one like Virtua Fighter. I also think that online fighting games are useless in the sense that I haven't played a single one that does not lag and imo fighting games with online lag are a joke and a waste of my time.

I agree with you 100%. It's so hard to play online when the lag is crazy. Try playing tennis with lag hahaha it's so funny. If they can do something about the lag than it might be worth picking up imo

I disagree with everything you said right there. 360 d-pad is fine, or at the very least on par with the PS3 one (if you want pain try playing SF on the PSP). I have not not any problems playing DOA, MK or SF games. Although using an analogue stick is not an option. I can't believe they even added this.

Secondly the lag can be a factor, but if your smart you can avoid laggy games. If you go in blindly playing random Americans, yes your experience will be hampered. I have no doubts that the VF team will rate connections above all else with the matchmaking/searching net code.

To me, this makes the PS3 verison a busted game. The dojo is indeed a massive step backwards from VF4 and the game feels a bit souless. At the very least they should have had leader boards for time attack etc on the PS3. Figthing games should all be trying to emulate the basics of DOA4 at the very least.

Taking your custom fighter online has so much appeal. If it's anywhere near as good as DOA4 online, this game will be a killer (it already is, but this is what makes a next-gen game). I loved the online leaderboards across all modes and the online fighting system.

Achievements also? Man, I cannot wait. MUST. HAVE. GAME.

IMO I too abhor the xbox d-pad for fighting games, may be me or whatever but I just easily pull moves off more easier with PS controllers.

This has got to suck for PS3 owners, unless SEGA release a D/L add on like Tekken 5 icon_wink.gif

Thirded - The 360 d-pad is utter garbage and needs to be taken out the back and shot.

Good news about the upgraded VF5 experience though, certainly explains the delay.

heyyy nice, knew waiting would pay off.

No issues with the 360 d-pad here, sure it could be better but its fine.

Dodgy online>no online anyday. With teh internets getting faster and faster, lag will hopefully be a thing of the past over the enxt few years anyways.

yeah the d-pad.....only really good for secondary functions, like how rainbow six vegas used it.

Are you a Microsoft Fanboy? The D-pad on xbox controllers is terrible.

Bah. Just get a Hori Arcade Stick and you'll be right.

I have no preference of either controller to be honest, I had no problems on the PS3 with VF5 and no issues thus far on the 360 playing a bunch of fighting games.

D-pad on the 360 is fine. Not as good as the Dreamcasts, but I certainly prefer it over the missing diangonal bits on the PS2/3 and the horrid PSP d-pad.

Add one more title to the library of awesome 360 games.

360 D-pad is fine, not the best not issue for me personally. PS2 isnt bad either, PSP is the worse.

Xbox 360 are stealing PS3's games!! 360 gets enough exclusives as it is like PGR, DOA, Halo, Bioshock and heaps others. Now where's Devil May Cry 4 gone? Oh that's right... the 360!!

Finally!

Okay, the 360 pad is an absolute no-no for something like VF. I’m serious. If Sega know what’s right (i'm guessing they do, but don’t care too much when it comes to the west), they’ll release a stick on day-1. If something like DOA can get one, Microsoft better make sure there’s one ready for VF5! As mentioned, using the analogue is beyond a joke, and the d-pad is way too inaccurate for high-level play. The PS2 pad for Evo was fine – not brilliant, but fine – but Microsoft’s efforts have always left a lot to be desired concerning fighters.

I gotta admit, taking VF5 online with my custom character, battling mates from all over the place – with lag or without – just sounds so awesome! Yeah, lag can be a real bitch, but it’s just really cool to be given the option to take such a game online. It’s been a dream ever since 4, and with Japan being the only ones with such a strong community, I just can’t describe how happy this announcement makes me! Definitely a step in the right direction.

Hopefully PS3 owners will get the same treatment, for the sake of expanding the community. I know a Version C patch, with updated tutorials, Quest, etc will be more than possible, but getting them online may be a little more difficult...

Either way, great news for fans of the series!

The Hori DOA arcade stick will alleviate the problem, too bad it's wired or i'd already have one.

The thing with the 360 d-pad is when you're doing quarter circles, half circles and full circles it's fine (so street fighter is ok) but it's the tapping of directions where it really falls apart (games like Mortal Kombat and Virtua Fighter). If you knew anything about fighting games (or if you were any good at them) you would know this.

It's pretty cool the 360 version is getting an online mode and i'm sure there are heaps of people out there who are going to enjoy this and quite honestly if I could put up with the lag I would swap my Ps3 version for a 360 version but lag sh!ts me so hard I don't even wanna be tempted to try Virtua Fighter 5 online cuz I know it's just going to enrage me. Like all this time I waited for Street Fighter Anniversary Collection on the Xbox to become backwards compatiable on the 360 and as soon as it did I jumped online to find some challenges but I was horrified while doing a dragon punch the game lagged hard and my move didn't come out at all.....it completely messes with your timing and you end up resorting to cheaps, turtleing or just basic tactics which make fighting games no fun for me. I mean i'm taking the time to learn the game properly and to actually become skilled at it and I hate it when all this turns to crap as soon as you hop online.

So why not just use the DOA one? does the picture on the arcade stick have to be of VF characters?

In total agreeance that the 360 D-pad is utterly devoid of any semblence of true functionality in tappity tap sort of games. How can they honestly think 'yeh that is a good feeling D-pad' when that was under construction.I reckon if the D-pad was twisted just a tiny bit anti clockwise it would be a bit better but that is like saying the main chick from sex and the city would look look less like a horse if she wore less makeup.

I wouldn't mind trying the grinding out the rubber under the D-pad trick but seriously I can't be arsed doing so.

Yeah, definitely, i couldn’t agree more.

You wanna go out there and be able to play your own way and not worry for things like lag. If it really does get that bad, where your play-style needs to be modified to accommodate lag, then i’m not sure just how much time i’d spend with it. The novelty would definitely wear off sooner rather than later.

But i’m confident when it comes to the team behind VF. I know they said it’s not going to be perfect, which is just covering their bases, but they won’t release it unless their entirely happy with what they’ve done.

Fingers crossed.

It certainly doesn’t. But you see, i never picked up the DOA stick, and therefore can’t find one anymore. Also, i didn’t say that it had to have a VF background, just something that resembled the quality of the DOA stick.

A stick is a necessity for VF, unlike DOA, where a pad can do the job. That’s of course subjective, and a matter of personal preference, but i’m going by what i’ve heard, seen and experienced. So i expect Microsoft/Sega to take note of this (a huge amount of effort and money has already been put into brining it to 360 in this form) and give us another quality stick when it finally arrives. Hell, re-release the DOA stick, i really don’t care, just give the majority of your target audience an option other than the 360 controller. If not, then don’t bother releasing it.
