Save and replay deathmatches in Halo 3

360 News | Saved Films feature confirmed for public beta.
The latest Halo 3 weekly update from Bungie has revealed that players will be able to save and replay footage of their multiplayer encounters in the Xbox 360 shooter. Better still, the "Saved Films" feature will be debuting in the public multiplayer beta of the game, which kicks off on May 16.

"We have to [...] try out one more feature that we’re including in the Beta," teased Bungie bod Frankie O'Connor in his latest weekly round-up of all things Halo 3. "A feature that definitely requires a lot of stress testing in a big population. This feature we’re testing is, for the moment, just a fun addition, that’s planned to grow into something pretty amazing by launch, and that feature is Saved Films. The version you’ll try in the Beta, is very, very, very limited. We just want you to play around with the general concept." And play with it we will, Frankie.

Elsewhere in the update, O'Connor revealed that splitscreen play had been designed in such a way that each player's individual screen would not be stretched too tall or too wide, but would be "windowed", preserving a proper, playable aspect ratio. It's the little things, eh?

Hmmm i'm wondering whether this will take off in the final release, It'll probably be better with guild's facing each other but like said in the article it's probably just there for fun in the end.

Also any idea on how large these reply files will be? i'm assuming depending on the length of the match it'll probably easily take 100mb.

Still reckon it's a fantastic idea. The ability to share your greatest moments online with friends.

I don't imagine the replay files will be that large. Remember, most replays are stored as a file containing all the events that occured during the match, rather than just a video. When playing back the replay, the game reproduces the data as though the game is being played again (and this is how you are able to pause, rewind, and change camera angles on the fly).

It doesn't save an actual movie to your hard drive, just the coordinates of what happened. It then re-creates the scene, blah....
