GTA IV details revealed

360 News | We take a close look at the trailer, first screenshots released.

Nobody can underestimate the appeal of the Grand Theft Auto series after today’s trailer was released. The trailer was released on RockstarGames.com at 8:00AM AEST and for hours fans have been trying to download the trailer.

The trailer can be viewed here but we thought we’d look at what precious little details were revealed. The most important detail that was revealed is that Grand Theft Auto IV is set in Liberty City. Liberty City featured on the side of a ship towards the end of the trailer and the words Liberty City appear on a few other buildings in the trailer.

The main protagonist also appears to be of Eastern European descent, the only hint we have about the game’s storyline at the moment is the protagonist’s comments “Life is complicated, I killed people, smuggled people, sold people, perhaps here things will be different”

Rockstar also provided some screenshots which can be found in our media panel.

I wonder how they will reinvigorate the whole genre. Hopefully with some non-cosmetic upgrades too. Multiplayer, better stealth sequences, better targeting and less of the hidden package rubbish.
Having said all of that I do like the GTA games, GTA:VCS was just proof that a lot of the mechanics and conventions are due for an overhaul.

Everyone keeps saying this is "Liberty City" but is clearly the REAL New York City, as far as can be seen from this trailer anyway.

Nothing i have seen has overly interested me.Saints Row should have been been made to look redundant after today-it has not.Wow we get to play sa some middle eastern guy, in Liberty City......again.I guess they were a lil too scared to try a new setting.

^ Did you not see the Statue of liberty and other such NYC landmarks in the trailer. It was clearly the ACTUAL city, or a really close copy called something else, but it was definitely not LC. I know the layout and look of LC, so unless they changed it completely from GTA III and GTA LC:S its not it.

I agree with DrTim - that is definitely New York.

Maybe the ship came *from* Liberty City and is docked in New York?

Liberty City/New York City-wtf is the difference?Same old big metropolis setting.Looks like we were being a bit ambitious with people hoping for gta-china or russia, or, you know, something hasn't been done to death 50 billion times.

I thought it was NY too, but then a lot of others think it's just a very NY-ised version of LC.

The word liberty appears (in some form) in all of the above captures.

Hmm now that you mention it those Screen Caps actually do look quite similar to LC. Ah well, NYC or LC, cool is cool.

Which specific layout of Liberty City do you know? The GTA1 layout? The GTA3/LCS layout? Or maybe the GTA Advance layout?

The city is definetly New York and the character is of Russian descent. From the teaser this appears obvious. Aside from the statue of Liberty, they swing briefly by the NYSX (New York Stock Exchange), with the trade figures being hustled across the screens.

I am totally scared. This game is poised to be the greatest of all time.

It's a new layout - It has to be because every single building they showed IS in NYC. I've seen them all. The Get A Life building is the Met Life building, the Brooklyn Bridge he walks over, the Statue of Liberty, it's looking AWESOME too. I love the eastern European main character as well! The graphics (city wise at least) are amazing and the people have a gritty feel which is finally a step away from their 'cartoony' feel from generation 3.

The only reason I thought it was LC was because of the L-train part, I always drove a car along that area and it looked pretty familiar.

In the Superman films, except for Returns and III, even though it's set in Metropolis there are New York landmarks throughout the films. Maybe they're just doing the same with GTA IV.

As soon as the trailer started I looked at the building walls and said that it was liberty city.As soon as it started I recognized the place as the same place where Maria's apartment is in LCS.

Well the transition from top down 2D to 3D is one thing. But to just re-hash an old city again in 3D (granted spectacular 3D) just seems kinda redundant is all. But like I said, don't really matter where it is it will be cool, would just be sweet to be somewhere new.

additionally, if you care to play the pause-pause-pause-pause-pause game at around 28 seconds, you might see a cop car with LCPD down the side.

if someone can tell me a good screen-cap program that'll work with WMP then i'll grab a screen. the few i've tried don't do anything more than Ctrl-PrntScrn, and that doesn't actually grab the movie.

^ It's only a very very brief flash on screen, but what you say is correct (great eyes if you spotted that yourself). It seems as if this really is LC.
