Why Gears of War looks better than Resistance

360 News | Insomniac boss explains all.
Insomniac Games bod Brian Hastings has responded to critics who have complained that the company's PlayStation 3 launch title, Resistance: Fall of Man, isn't as good-looking as the Xbox 360's Gears of War. In a tirade titled "10 Reasons Why PS3 Will Win This Console Generation", Hastings was keen to explain why Gears trumped Resistance in the visuals department.

"Sometimes people ask us, 'If Resistance takes 14 gigabytes, why doesn't it look better than Gears?'" began Hastings. "Well, for one, Resistance didn't support texture streaming, so we had to make choices about where we spent our high-res textures. Resistance also had 30 single-player chapters, six multiplayer maps, uncompressed audio streaming, and high-definition mpegs. That all added up to a lot of space on the disc.

"Starting with Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction we are supporting texture streaming, which will make the worlds look even better, and will also consume even more space on disc. Gears of War is a beautiful game and shows off the highest resolution textures of anything yet released, partly because of the Unreal Engine's ability to stream textures," he continued. "This means that you can have much higher resolution textures than you could normally fit in your 512 MB of RAM. It also means that you’re going to chew up more disc space for each level.

"With streamed textures, streamed geometry and streamed audio, even with compression, you can quickly approach 1GB of data per level. That inherently limits you to a maximum of about 7 levels, and that’s without multiplayer levels or mpeg cut-scenes. There’s no question that you can always cut more levels, compress the audio more, compress the textures more, down-res the mpeg movies, and eventually get any game to fit on a DVD. But you paid for a high-def experience, right?"

So there you go - why Gears is prettier than Resistance, straight from the horse's mouth. What do you lot think?

What I find quite amusing is that in the long run none of this mine is bigger than yours graphical this graphical that banter isn't going to mean jack except to the people that like to banter about it on internet.

Not like this stuff is on the headline news or anything.

Mar 27, 2007 : 10 Reasons Why PS3 Will Win

3. 50 GB games
If you ever hear someone say “Blu-Ray isn’t needed for this generation,” rest assured they don’t make games for a living. At Insomniac, we were filling up DVDs on the PS2, as were most of the developers in the industry. We compressed the level data, we compressed the mpeg movies, we compressed the audio, and it was still a struggle to get it to fit in 6 gigs. Now we’ve got 16 times as much system RAM, so the level data is 16 times bigger. And the average disc space of games only gets bigger over a console’s lifespan. As games get bigger, more advanced and more complex, they necessarily take up more space. If developers were filling up DVDs last generation, there are clearly going to be some sacrifices made to fit current generation games in the same amount of space.
RFoM was not compressed properly in an effort to make Blu-Ray seem necessary.

Granted, some really great Xbox 360 games have squeezed onto a DVD9. Gears of War is a beautiful game and shows off the highest resolution textures of anything yet released, partly because of the Unreal Engine’s ability to stream textures. This means that you can have much higher resolution textures than you could normally fit in your 512 MB of RAM. It also means that you’re going to chew up more disc space for each level. With streamed textures, streamed geometry and streamed audio, even with compression, you can quickly approach 1 GB of data per level. That inherently limits you to a maximum of about 7 levels, and that’s without multiplayer levels or mpeg cutscenes.
GoW is only seven levels? And no room for multiplayer?

There’s no question that you can always cut more levels, compress the audio more, compress the textures more, down-res the mpeg movies, and eventually get any game to fit on a DVD. But you paid for a high-def experience, right? You want the highest resolution, best audio, most cinematic experience a developer can offer, right? That’s why Blu-Ray is important for games, and why it will become more important each year of this hardware cycle.
I don't see how devs using compression affects the HD experience. It means that they're not being lazy.

5. HDMI
A lot has been said about Sony’s choice to ship with composite cables. I won’t say I agree with that decision, but I think too little has been said of the fact that even the cheaper PS3 SKU supports HDMI 1.3. The PS3 was the first consumer device to support it, and this is a very important future-proofing step. When you go to buy higher-end TVs, the PS3 will support the highest possible audio and video input the TV and receiver can accept. If and when high-def movies start requiring an Image Constraint Token, the PS3 will still be able play them in high definition.

Right now, HDMI seems primarily to be a selling point to the hardcore audio and videophiles of the world. But HDTVs are getting cheaper and more popular all the time, and consumer sophistication and knowledge of high definition audio and video is growing. In a couple years, HDMI devices will be the standard. Graphics and audio in games will also continue to improve, and more and more consumers will want HDMI in order to get the best results on their home theater setups. As this happens, Microsoft has a difficult choice – do they stick with “last gen” video output, or do they release a premium version of the Xbox 360 that includes HDMI but effectively forces early adopters to re-buy the system to get the best results? Sony ultimately made their console more expensive by including HDMI, but over the next couple years it’s likely to play out as the right choice.
360 Elite comes with HDMI cables.
Quote
6. Standard HDD
When we were developing for PS2, I was jealous of Xbox’s standard hard drive. There are so many things this allowed you to consider as a developer – virtually unlimited save data, improved load times, custom music, downloadable content and user-created content just to name a few. But since hard drives, no matter what the size, never get cheaper than about $50, Microsoft lost money trying to compete with the PS2’s price. That may be the reason they left it out of the cheaper Xbox 360 SKU, thinking that Sony would again leave out the hard drive on the PS3. Instead, Sony made the hard drive standard for both SKUs. This added to the cost of the PS3, but it also let developers use the HDD in games.

The problem with including a hard drive in one version of the 360 and not in the other is that developers can’t use it for the games. Or, at least, they can’t use it for any required features. When you are guaranteed to have at least a 20 GB hard drive in the console, you can write your load caching routines around it, or use it for your application’s storage needs. To a developer, an optional hard drive is roughly equivalent to no hard drive at all.

Another advantage of the PS3 is that it will let you put in any third party hard drive you want. From a developer’s standpoint, this is good news because the market will gradually be able to support larger downloadable games over the course of the PS3’s life. As downloadable content gets larger and more sophisticated, PS3 owners can choose to buy larger hard drives at the best market price. The more this happens, the more developers will be encouraged to create better and better downloadable games.
Um, don't most of my games support the HDD? Either through DLC or patches.
Quote
8. PS3 Has a Major CPU Advantage
The GPUs on the Xbox 360 and PS3 are roughly equivalent, with the Xbox 360 arguably having a slight edge. The difference in CPU power, however, is far greater with the PS3 enjoying the advantage. The PS3’s eight parallel CPUs (one primary “PPU” and seven Cell processors) give it potentially far more computing power than the three parallel CPUs in the Xbox 360. Just about any tech programmer will tell you that the PS3’s CPUs are significantly more powerful. The problem is that it has been challenging thus far to take advantage of the Cell’s parallel architecture.

With the PS2, Sony got away with making a fairly developer-unfriendly system, and its success allowed their hardware designers to ignore developer’s complaints as they made the PS3. People high up at Sony have realized that approach simply won’t work anymore and are trying to fix the problem. Sony is actively improving their libraries, tools and developer support in order to make PS3 development easier. They are giving first party developed techniques and code to third-party developers so that multi-platform games should start looking better on PS3.

Games developed from the ground up on PS3 are the ones that will really show off the PS3’s CPU advantage. The complexity of the distributed processing architecture means that PS3 engines won’t fully blossom until a little later in the lifecycle than the PS2. This has put the PS3 at a disadvantage early in its lifecycle, but within two years you will see games that surpass what is possible on the Xbox 360.
Then why do the devs of Assassin's Creed say the 360 has better processing power, and therefore better AI? The graphics for that game are sharper on PS3 though.
Quote
9. PS2 still outselling 360
I know, it’s outselling the PS3 by an even larger margin.
But the continued strong PS2 sales really are a good thing for Sony. Anyone buying a PS2 at this point is probably not going to buy a PS3 or Xbox 360 in the next year. And when they do choose to buy the current generation of hardware, the PS3 will be in a lot better position. The price will have come down, the game library will be broad, and the top PS3 titles will probably have the edge in both graphics and sound. Just as important, the people buying into the PS2 now will be getting into many of Sony’s exclusive franchises that they will then later want to play on the PS3.
He's waisting perfectly good bits and bytes with this. Nintendo DS outsells PS2. They are cheaper than next-gen consoles. Fruit outsells Porsche cars.

10. Something For Everyone
One of Sony’s biggest advantages is that it has strong franchises in every genre. Whereas Microsoft’s successful titles are mostly M-rated, and Nintendo’s are mostly E-rated, Sony has a big list of hit titles across the spectrum. When a 30-something gamer (like me) goes to buy a game console, it’s a lot easier to justify the purchase when there are games he can play with his kids as well as more mature stuff.

To Microsoft’s credit, they are doing a good job of catching up. The acquisition of Rare and the development of Viva Pinata have helped to broaden their spectrum. But it takes time to build a franchise, and Sony has been building their suite of titles for over a decade. Consider the breadth, success and critical acclaim of some of their exclusive properties: The Getaway
OK, stop right there. The Getaway games are some of the cruddiest games ever to grace the PS2.

and Twisted Metal. These are all million-plus sellers worldwide that are either already announced or likely to appear on PS3. Add to this Sony’s new line up of first-party titles, including Heavenly Sword, Lair, Motorstorm, Resistance: Fall of Man, Uncharted and White Knight Story, and they have an even deeper and stronger line-up than what they had on PS2.

You'd think that by compressing data you'll lessen the quality its common sense, just like when you convert a bmp image into a jpeg you lose an amount of quality by stripping data from it, by having it uncompressed on a bluray you wont be sacrifing anything just to fit it on a smaller storage disc AKA HD-DVD

Sure, 360 'elite' comes with hdmi cables but that system isnt even out yet and they had to put out a second system cause they did a half assed job on the first one.

Fact: you lose more using Blu-Ray compared to HD-DVD because HD-DVD requires Lossless compression to be used. Blu-Ray doesn't require it.

And there is no bias in his VERY pro-ps3 article. Sony have been telling us how we need blu-ray for next gen graphics, the point that everybody is making is that RTFoM doesn't NEED to be bigger than GoW when the textures are not the same quality. I'm sure GoW would also be a large game if it were not for compression.

No, he was talking about how the PS2 hardware is outselling the Xbox 360 hardware. It's like saying that Ford Festivas are outselling BMW M3's. A lot of people aren't committed enough to gaming, or in a financial situation, to drop $700-$1,000 on a console with (mostly) full price games. The PS2 is cheap, the games are cheap, and not everybody needs to be bleeding edge. That is why Nintendogs and Singstar sell so damn well.

My point is that it would be comparable. The only 2 decent exclusives RIGHT NOW are Motorstorm and Resistance. I don't think that they will be "cloned".

Bottom line, defensive PS3 fanboy dude, is that I'm not even dissing the PS3. I want one. My point is that the writer of the article is a biased nob, who accuses the entire community, media and even gamers as being wrong in not proclaiming the PS3 as the new messiah. It's just a console, and Sony as a company, deserve the negative press. Doesn't anybody remember the dead pixels on the PSP? They were deemed a normal part of the LCD manufacturing process, and not a fault. No PSP's with dead pixels, including my own would be fixed. They even closed down all the forum topics complaining about this on playstation.com.au. I don't think that MS or Nintendo are infallible, quite the opposite. This rabid, blind fanboyism should stop. I owned a PS2, Xbox and Gamecube so that I could get the best (or only) version of a game for whichever console it came out for. It's about the games, but you really sound like you're a Sony employee, probably from PR.

The Sony PR guy was annoying me. I do love R&C, not so fussed on the other two though. Even though Ubi are corporate and evil, they do release awseome games even if only for the Tom Clancy games and Prince of Persia. Ubi are like EA, if you have a look at your collection you won't belive how many Ubi titles there are.

I don't even own a PS3 yet, only the Wii and a 360. The problem is, through all of your rebuttals you're still missing some very key points about his statements.

Just quickly (no quoting this time)
It doesn't stream textures, meaning it can't utilise the textures in the same manner, meaning compressed textures would make it run like a whore.

The HDD point is stupid, because regardless of whether or not 360 devs are capable of tacking on some extra cars in your Forza game, they can't fully utilise a HDD because not everyone will have one. And Blu-Ray needing the caching... Yeesh. That's just wrong. You could not find a single dev who would say "You know what, i PREFER it when we stream everything we have off a disc. Caching, in my opinion, is a bad thing." You will never find that man. Ever.

Unfortunately, i'm still capped, so i can't see some of your other points, but all in all, you've attacked a man who, while biased, knows a **** ton more than you do, especially about his own game, and you are not in a position to shoot down his points. Especially if you're going to ignore large facts and take things out of context.

And Qbert, it wasn't a stab, just a re-iteration. For EMPHA-sis.

The lack of texture streaming is a programming issue. The PS3 is more than powerful enough to display Resistance whilst using compressed textures and audio without breaking a sweat, it's a powerfull machine.

Caching improves performance, reading from a HDD is quicker than any optical format on the market. I don't find the load times on the 360 worth complaining about (I didn't buy Sonic), so I don't really see the point. If every game caches a bucketload of uncompressed data on your HDD, it's going to fill up very quickly. Even more so with the 360's 20GB.

I meant that the Gamecube was the cheapest console, therefore a poor mans Halo would be on the GC, and the GC that was most comparative to Halo 2 was Metroid Prime 2.

Joaby, you have clearly just come here to start flame wars. I'm sure that even the people who ignored the Wii / 360 and brought a PS3 can see that the original writer is extremely biased, misleading and in some cases wrong.

EDIT: I removed a cheap shot and decided to be a little bit more mature.

Whatever it is, just chill out - I like the PS3, Wii, 360 and PC. I would show just as much disdain for a similar article written by a solely MS or Nintendo developer. This guy attacks other formats and companies in his rant and I will not accept it as gospel because you tell me to. I like these forums because there aren't full of pointless flamers such as yourself, so either get to the point or jog off.

^Bovine, if you're that touchy on the issue you shouldn't start posting in the first place. Don't call Joaby a 12 year old just because he/she sees things differently.

I think this guy's blog had a ring of truth to it but I think that you're forgetting that it is a blog. It was an piece of persuasive prose written by a guy who is obviously tired of overly negative gaming media, so of course its going to be a little far-fetched.

I'm more than happy to discuss the issue with people such as yourself without getting into a childish argument. I didn't get annoyed with Joaby because he saw things differently, I got annoyed with his petty insults. He didn't like my point of view, so started trying to insult me.

Everybody is entitled to a point of view, and they will inevitably be different. I really don't see why people have the idea in their heads that one console must reign supreme, and anybody with a different console is somehow going to become a social lepper. Every console fills a niche and caters to people's personal preference. There is no right and wrong, only choice which is something that we should embrace.

Ultimately, anyone who wishes to, has the right to critique this dude's blog without fear of retribution from trolls.

Well isnt the guy who posted the blog in the first place his point of view? and that you didnt like how he said it so started insulting him? And now your upset because people are having a go at your for having a go at him >< just sounds like a ongoing circle

I didn't join these forums to flame, i joined them to trade, but i couldn't help but notice you spouting facts and ignoring context. I honestly don't care what you think of me, all i did was call you out when you were making poor arguments. You posted a 10 point, witty rebuttal to a mans blog posting, and all i did was defend the guy who wasn't present. If you want to get upset with me because you wanted your counter-rant to be un-challenged, well, i'm sorry for you.

Then challenge the points and don't try to insult me. I accept that my opinion is not the only opinion, that does not change the fact that you started posting with insults, when counter argments would have been fine. I have not wronged anybody buy voicing my opinion and I don't get why it offended you in the first place.

It all comes down to the fact that Brian Hastings was upset with the fact that Resistance didn't live up to it's own hype, and Halo 3 and Killzone will have to be the best shooters ever to live up to their hype. It is a good game, just not as good as GoW in terms of graphics or gameplay. Insomniac just need to accept that they didn't make the better game, and improve with their future titles.

There is a huge amount of competition-bashing and viral marketing BS this generation, it really is growing old.
