Sony responds to Xbox 360 Elite

360 News | They're quick off the mark.
With the Xbox 360 Elite announcement just happening, Sony has wasted no time in responding to rumours of Microsoft's modified black Xbox 360 console.

Speaking to Wired, senior VP of marketing for Sony Peter Dille said, "We think every PlayStation 3 owner should have an “elite” experience, which is why we include an internal hard drive and HDMI output in every PS3 we sell, along with the 50 GB of storage capacity on a high definition Blu-ray disc. Sony has been the strongest advocate of high definition as the future of next-generation gaming. This requires high-definition components, including HDMI output, and large storage devices to deliver and store all that rich and vivid HD content.

"Microsoft’s announcement today not only legitimises Sony’s PS3 strategy, it moves us closer to adopting universal standards in the area of high definition gaming that will benefit game developers and ultimately the end user."

Okay...... So Sony has decided to comment on a rumour that isn't even about their company. Kinda weird that.....
yeah, they have kinda jumped the gun here... and they didn't say anything about the larger HDD either
5 years ago
Rather than commenting on the larger HDD they commented on the larger storage capacities that Blu-Ray discs are capable of.

Sony and Microsoft are going just as hard at one another as ever now that their consoles are directly competing once again.

Microsoft have officially announced the Elite now. I'll post my thoughts on that whenever the article gets put up.

...what's the point in Sony worrying about a larger HDD? I thought you were able to just replace the HDD in the PS3 with your own if you wanted a larger capacity?

They're clearly trying to stick it to Microsoft (and in some ways they have a point), but I'm not entirely sure what the point is, sounds like they just want an excuse to promote the PS3.

Its almost like they are wearing t-shirts saying <-------12 inches------->

It just sounds so childish

And when has that ever been different? It's the essence of marketing in this generation.

In this case though I think some comment from Sony is fair enough. They took a lot of flack, from Microsoft in particular, about the PS3 being 'overspec-ed'. It's only fair enough that they point out that (some of) the same features they were critisised for are now being touted by Microsoft as 'elite'.

I think it also goes to show that Sony have something with this whole 'we'll be on this platform for ten years' thing. The 360 has only been available for a year, and already they're looking at new versions. I really doubt we'll see an 'even best-er' PS3 a year from now ... if only because there's not much left that they could put in the thing.

Sony are right. The Ps3 is basically the complete system out of the box whereas the 360 seems to be tacking on stuff here and there....and the announcement of this 'elite' model doesn't actually make me happy as I would've preferred a model where I didn't have to get the disc drive replaced and which doesn't heat up as much! Also I would've really preferred a black system not to mention a 120 gig hdd. The Ps3 still has one up by having Blu-Ray though. I'd laugh if Microsoft made a Super Turbo Elite Edition with a HD-Dvd drive built in. I almost see it happening infact...give it about 2 years.

Too bad this elite edition doesn't have the wifi and the power brick built in.

I guess where sony is going is that M$ users now have to upgrade their 360 with the elite model if they want better gaming (?) while sony uses were giving the elite model to begin with.

Well, 360 user don't have to upgrade their 360s, but I think you've got it right. Of course technically speaking the PS3 makes the 360 look bad (Blu-Ray, HDMI, bigger HDD), so I'm sure that quite a few 360 owner will want to upgrade, however it isn't exactly mandatory either. It all depends on how much value these features hold for consumers.

Huh?

You can only agree they have a point if you know what that point is.Oxymoron for the win.

OK, that was bad wording on my part. What I meant was, I see their point, but I'm not quite sure where they're going with it. I suppose they're just rubbing the fact that the 360 "needs to be upgraded to compete with the PS3" in M$'s faces.

I don't see how M$ needs to upgrade to compete, the fact is that even before this announcement of a new console, M$ was still offering an more HD gaming outofthebox experience then PS3 is with it's current Premium Deal. you have to buy your component cable or you HDMI cable separately if you want that HD experience with PS3. Now M$ throws out another option with twice the storage space of the PS3, HDMI option with HDMI cables and Component Cables included, a headset and it is still cheaper than a PS3, You can argue blu-ray all you want, but I don't care I'll purchase my blu-ray when its $200 just like I did with DVD and it will probably be better then the one in the PS3. And as for software, well lets face it with the recent news of less and less exclusivity with titles for all consoles smart consumers will buy the one the offers the most at the best price. This is where PS3 need to compete, not M$

They neglected their love for Composite Cables in this phrase here.

That's why I put it in quotation marks. I wasn't saying it myself, I was doing an impression of what Sony (and faboys) would be saying. I totally agree with what you're saying.

Microsoft are obviously covering there tracks! A few years ago HDMI and 1080p wasnt nececary, and know we have an Xbox Elite. Business wise Microsoft have done very well to get to the point there at in the market, there add on approch has worked well. I just dont know weather the Elite will just confuse consumers, or extend there market lead.
Sony have a damn good point, as their machine comes prebuilt with everything HD ready (aside from the composite cables, which I still don't understand), whilst MS are now saying "CRAP WE DONT WANT TO LOOK BAD NOW" and release a revamped version of the 360.
How is a new port, any different to a slimeline PS2 with an ethernet port built in? Oh sure the PS2 got smaller, but the 360 is as small as it can get with the current technology. Hypocritcy is the name of the game people.

He just murdered the english language.

I don't think the 360 was in need of an upgrade in any way or form yet. I mean, the price of the HDD is ridiculous, and the price of the Elite console itself is a joke. Releasing a console at an inflated price, when one of your key marketing/sales factors was the price?

Come on man, they were doing so well at not making themselves look like tools. Sony have been tripping over themselves in this whole leadup, with Microsoft laughing all the way to the bank.

What would be the point in that? Sure, eventually everyone will need one but right now, less than half of the PS3 consumers would be using that cable, me thinks.
