Black Xbox 360 confirmed

360 News | HDMI, 120GB, and really, really black.
Engadget has confirmed with "trusted sources" that the black Xbox 360 is definitely coming. This matches reports by Game Informer, who insist it isn't an April Fool's joke.

Named the "Xbox 360 Elite", it will be a limited edition version of the 360, with a limited production run of unspecified numbers (potentially as low as a few hundred thousand). It will include a HDMI output, a 120GB hard drive, and will apparently run cooler than the current 360s (although it has not been confirmed that it will use a 65nm fabrication process). There are no current plans to integrate HD-DVD or WiFi into the Elite or future Premiums, but it is expected that the Elite will eventually replace the current Premium lineup, most likely to maintain pricing at current levels by bundling in additional features.

RRP will be US$479, which works out on a simple exchange rate calculation to approximately AU$600 / £245 / €360. The usual $100 markup for shipping, GST, and local warranty / marketing support takes the local price to a likely AU$700 - AU$750. Launch date has not been specified, but it's expected that the 120GB / HDMI bundle will replace the current Premium featureset sometime in Q3 / Q4, suggesting that the Xbox 360 Elite is likely to launch within the next few months. If the small production run estimates are correct, it is highly likely that very few will be available in Australia, if any.

^ Isn't that pretty much what he's doing?

Gah, this "Elite" system. Microsoft just keep throwing out more reasons for me to buy this damn console but I can't freaking afford it, damn them. Damn them to Hell.

Can saves on the HDD be transfered to a Mem Unit and then to another HDD?

What's interesting is that they're releasing a more expensive unit. Almost everyone puts the 360's price up as a huge advantage it has over the PS3 -'same experience for slightly over half the price' goes the standard line. So it seems odd that their' spotlight unit will actually go up in price. Sure the old unit will still be available, but it will be effectively marketed as 'second best' since they'll be pushing the new model.

Still, it will be interesting to see how this plays out. May be a good way for cheapskates like me to get hold of a second hand unit. Although given all the cases of broken systems, second hand may not be the best idea...

What do you guys think about the idea of getting a second hand unit?

I'll be selling my 2nd-hand 360 on ebay, if an opportunity to get the new 360 presents itself. Many people may not be able to afford the new 360, or they won't want it, so I'm counting on that.

My 360 has been very well looked after by the way. icon_smile.gif

I would never buy a 2nd hand 360, David.

Yes, they are releasing a more expensive unit, but it will eventually replace the PRemium console for the normal Premium price, hopefully. It's just the limited edition run of them that will cost more.

Although I wonder how limited it actually will be..

I have no use for HDMI. All my TVs are CRT and the best imput they have is sVideo. Considering "Hi Def" gaming / Viewing seems completely pointless unless you have a MINIMUM 42" screen to absorb it, and those still cost thousands, it will be many (many) years before I am even slightly interested in "Hi Def".

As for the black... well lets just say that anyone who actually likes black has obviously never used a duster in their life and does not mind their property looking grotty and horrid the instant it is exposed to their non-vacuum sealed, non-dust free, impure air household.

So that leaves ... what? A 120gig HDD? Useful only if you are a complete hoarder of useless demo's OR if you do not have a years worth of saves already on the 20gig one every 360 owner already has.

I would much have preferred a price DROP, not packing in even more useless junk I don't want / have no use for.
