Devil May Cry 4 goes multi-platform

360 News | Xbox 360 getting the game on day one, PC release to follow.
And another PS3 exclusive falls.

Capcom has announced on its Japanese website that the previously PS3 exclusive Devil May Cry 4 will also be released on the Xbox 360 and PC. While there have been unsubstantiated rumours of the possibility, it still comes as a shock, since unlike the similar rumours about the Metal Gear franchise jumping ship, the Devil May Cry series has always been exclusive to Sony machines. Also surprising is the announcement that the game will be coming to PC, although it is implied that it will be at a later date.

A machine translation of the Japanese press release reads:

"Devil May Cry 4 ' "PlayStation 3", Xbox 360, with the multi-platform of PC sale decision!, and says that after popular showings at the 2006 Tokyo Game Show, they decided to bring the game to both PS3 and Xbox 360 'simultaneously', with a later PC release assumed. The release date is only listed as 'Undecided', so it could still be a way off.

The PS3 has been going through some hard times recently, being handily outsold by its competitors in both Japan and the US every week, so Capcom's decision seems likely to be based on their perception of where money can be made. No mention of releases outside Japan yet, but given the 360 barely registers on the Japanese market, western releases would be the entire point of this announcement.

I am not surprised at all. To believe a third party company will remain loyal to just one console is foolish because at some point there's going to be an exclusive title released across all platforms.

Resident Evil 4 is one of many prime examples of this.

So where's the Wii release, not to mention a multi-platform release of Lost Planet & Dead Rising (BS Capcom)

Along with the Wii getting it's own RE anyway..

There's also plenty of examples of exclusive games just being crap, so I don't see your point a game being crap after it goes multi-platform icon_wink.gif

I think people are forgetting something here. They are forgetting that the majority of these games (or franchises) that people consider to be 'exclusives' for a platform, are only recent franchises anyway. Most of the big names where there is concern as to whether they will be multiplatform or not were only started within the last generation (or if not started within it, reached their peak within it) and as such it takes time for these franchises to grow in popularity. I fully expect that this generation we will also see many new franchises started, most of which will be exclusive to whichever console and then as we enter the next generation in 5-10 years time, we'll be having the same arguments/discussions again about those respective franchises. So yeah, on that regard alone I have absolutely no problem with Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Solid or any other franchise going multiplatform. It's allowing people who may not have had the chance previously to experience these awesome franchises and that can only be a good thing, right?

Now, personally this news is great for me as it means it will be another title that I will be able to experience at release (or thereabouts) without having to have my PS3 beforehand to be able to play it/them. It gives me more room (if you will) to make said PS3 purchase and it doesn't mean that I will be missing out, or waiting longer for fun with this or any other multi-platform titles.

Plus as smelly Jim said, it's got achievements now. Win. icon_wink.gif

Edit: To oppose that though, PS3 has Home now and within that, the various trophies that you can have on display. I wonder what will be more exciting and, dare I say it, addictive to go after. Perhaps games like this going multiplatform is infact a bad thing for us multiplatform gamers because we may so addicted to each platform's E-peen 'thing' that we may end up buying two copies of each game, just so we can have all the benefits...

also a note about the trophy room, does anyone know if we can customize it? it really just looked like a default room which holds your trophy so i guess we wont be able to change the appeareance of it then huh?

I have faith in Capcom's programmers and I am currently leaning towards the Ps3 version because it's quite far into development so I would figure the 360 version would be a port of this.

I am quite disppointed because I see this multiplatform thing becoming the standard for Capcom....and I can't really blame them (increased developing costs). I just hope they don't become lazy and not optimise each game to the maximum potential for each console.

Also i'd much rather have a big flaming statue of that Balrog boss-type-thing than just some little gamerpic and some points.

^ And he's back!

I can't see this being a problem with many people. Many will either have a PS3 or a 360, and not all would have both, so for them the decision would be easy. The PS3 version would have some advantages due to six-axis, and the 360 due to rumble.

I still can't help myself and laugh about Sony losing their exclusives though, its quite a hit.

And Nis, damn boy, I smell gooood. icon_wink.gif

Yea man, check out my post in General Gaming (state of the game).

Seems Sony have paid the price for releasing their console a year later but I commend them for sticking to their guns....because damn the 360 has had a lot of problems and I figure they were all because the machine was rushed out exactly for these reasons (to steal market share, increase dev support etc)....but it looks like their underhanded tactics have paid off for them.

Except the 15% US gamers with faulty machines at launch. icon_wink.gif They wanted market share and there're getting it.

Yeah for sure, being exclusive doesn't ensure its good. Just that because they only have to spend time programming for one console, they get more time to polish, refine, tweak and max out the hardware.

Then again, studios may just use that extra time to release the game early.....
Although Crest, I don't mind waiting longer for a game to get that extra 'polish'. My friends keep complaining about Forza 2, and I just tell them to relax, its worth the wait, let them take their time, why rush? Polish, peoples..
^ Yeah the worst thing is when developers cut corners to get a game out early.

Forza 2 I think will be made even better since it is an exclusive. The developers don't have to make the graphics engine compatibile with the PS3 and so get a-hella lot more out of the 360.

Kinda what I hoped for DMC4. I don't care whether its on the 360 or PS3, I just didn't want it to be on both.

Well knowing Capcom surely they will have system specific bonuses like hidden characters, options...y'know so the hardcore will buy a copy on each system. icon_wink.gif

I'm not too worried about whether having a statue or a pic either as I'll mostly be playing the game and not bothering with that crap too much. It's nice and all and I would definitely go for the PS3 in that respect just because that trophy room just looks so cool..but y'know I just want to play the games.

Oh and yeah...good to see it is coming out on the 360...umm yeah...that is all.

I'd say the PS3 will get ports at some stage it just depends how much effort is required to get them across and if there are sufficient numbers to offset development costs.

MS and Capcom may really have an exclusive agreement (*shock and horror*).

Capcom have plenty of practice with the Xbox 360 so porting a PS3 DMC version over should not be too hard.

Wii version well you could do Dead Rising but it would be awfully cut down.

Lost Planet probably no chance on the hardware that the Wii provides.

My question also is why would you want this hardcore stuff on a Wii? Best to be a multi console owner and enjoy both universes.

Considering how well Dead Rising and Lost Planet sold/are selling on 360, Capcom would not want to miss out on devveloping many games for 360 at all.

It makes sense, don't it?

Well, I agree with the bit about the trophy room looking cool, I really like the look of it! Having acheivements that can be viewed in a physical form is rather cool, you could make a very nice display of them.

Yeah i just hope there is also an option to view them in game, or in a lobby so you can size up the other players skill. But having a physical (sort of) trophy room is going to be great.

I'm very happy by this news. I finished DMC on my friends Playstation I liked it that much.. but being an Xbox owner I never got to play the 3rd. Now owning only a 360 I will get to play this gem... such a score.

How do you know?

You don't think they just started working on the 360 version the day of the announcement do you?
