Xbox 360 successor coming!

360 News | In *cough* 2012.
Microsoft honcho Peter Moore has revealed that the company is already laying down plans for the Xbox 360's successor, with 2012 the date circled in red on the company calendar. Moore's announcement regarding Microsoft's next-next generation machine came in an interview with North American games mag EGM, and apparently a crack team at the Seattle-based firm is already exploring what potential computing power will be around five years from now.

Meanwhile, Moore also hinted to the magazine that Microsoft was on the verge of dropping the Xbox 360 Core system altogether, though steered clear of official confirmation on the matter.

Dropping the Core SKU seems interesting, especially considering the rumours of the so called "Blackbox". However I must stress again that the 360's OS can't see more than 20GiB of space.

I wonder what kind of mad proccessing power the consoles of 2012 will have icon_eek.gif

An update could easily change that though.

As for dropping the core model. Release the pro pack for the core price would REALLY hurt Sony

Is that a formatting problem (like FAT32's limit) or a matter for the OS? If it's the latter, surely it could be updated in these new consoles like renegadesx suggested.

OS problem I believe, what I'm pointing out is that a Dashboard update will come out prior to any increase in HDD space. An update is scheduled for this Quarter though icon_razz.gif

2012. i had a funny feeling they were going to drop a new console around late 2009 early 2010 and really kick sony in the guts by jumping a generation ahead of the ps3. that didnt seem that far fetched seeing as the first xbox was only 4 years behind the 360. still, i guess its all good as long we keep seeing great games pushing the systems limits right up until 2012.

Yeah that makes sense on one level but then on another level look at how the PS2, a generation-older console is outselling the 360 right now.

yeah but the only reason for that is price. and clever games with mass appeal like singstar. is the ps2 the highest selling console at the moment
? i'm not sure but it makes sense if it is. what will happen when the 360 eventually drops in price, say around 2008. will sony be able to compete? even if the ps3 is technically superior, we all know that doesnt mean much to mr. barry basic gamer who just wants to have a reasonably priced console under his telly. the original xbox seemed far superior to the ps2 technically, at least to me, but didnt the ps2 absolutely spank it sales wise? i've made my console choice for the next few years and its going to be interesting to see how this generation plays out and when the next one will start.

^ That's only because there was no real visual difference between XB and the PS2. This generation however there will be a major difference once the PS3 devs start taking full adv of the tech.

Yes there are other factors which make the PS2 sell better but I just wanted to point out that having the newest console out doesn't necessarily mean you'll do well.

And yes the Xbox visuals > PS2.

i thought there was a clear difference between xbox and ps2 visuals actually. and i think we will have to wait and see how much better ps3 graphics are. its all well and good to have a machine that is theoretically powerful, we will just have to wait and see what games look like in 2-3 years.

*Rubs hands with glee* icon_smile.gif We can only image what we'll have available to us in 5 years time, the PS4 and Xbox 720 will make our new consoles look bad! I think that crack team will have some interesting results.

Don't forget that the PS4 won't be out until 2017 according to all the Sony Exec's and by that time there should DEFINITELY be ways of making even better graphics then the PS3 and it will become technologically inferior.

5 years huh? Considering I'm buying a 360 in the next few months for the first time I won't be buying a console closer to the end of its reign rather than the start.

Of course, the PS3 and X360 have pretty much nailed down realism in games, the only way that I can see to go forward would be to integrate more stuff like the Wii remote (direct user interaction), and possibly move into VR, since by then graphics should be about perfect. icon_smile.gif

Don't underestimate how much graphics can change in the space of 5 years. I don't think that games are any where near NAILING down realism. Sure they can make things look sort of realistic but you still look at a game and say, "Hmmm it look's good but it could look better". As long as you can look at the graphics and tell that they aren't real people and landscapes then they have room for improvement.

Well at the very least if they can't make the games look better they can start making the same things cheaper.
