Capcom licenses Unreal Engine 3.0

360 News | And another one bites the dust.
Only several days after Activision announced an agreement with Epic to use its Unreal Engine 3.0 for an unannounced project, Japanese development studio Capcom has also jumped on the bandwagon, announcing that the company will use the engine for an unannounced project being developed in North America.

Epic Vice President Mark Rein was pleased with the deal, praising Capcom as a company that is “known for the quality and artistry of their games […] We’re glad that Unreal Engine 3 can be a part of their creative process.”

The third generation Unreal Engine has already gathered a lot of support from a number of big companies, including Square Enix, Sony and Electronic Arts, who have all licensed the engine for future projects.

Man, Epic must be rolling in it by now. I'll leave 'it' up to interpretation.

I suppose I should be happy by this news, but I just hope all next gen games running UE3 won't start to look samey. I know art style can do wonders for diversity, but I don't it to reach a point where I'll be able to discern a game is running UE3 just by looking at it.

I do find it weird that Japanese companies are licensing the Unreal engine, they usually love to keep to their own.

This engine though does seem to have more broad potential than the previous FPS ones. I think it could be adapted to a Resident Evil title pretty well (not expecting RE5 to use it though)

UE3.0 is getting whored out more than Renderware was last gen. Crazy!

Weird, since Capcom has its own inhouse engine, they want to milk out. Maybe issues porting MT framework on other platform like ps3 might be issue.

I'm guessing they'd use UE3 considering the engine itself is incredibly versatile and easy to work with. And I'm with you with the PS3 also, considering the thing is of what I know, difficult to work with.

I am all for this as long as the games don't turn out to be very similiar to each other. I think there was a big discussion about it before.

The thing to remember though is that this will speed up development and that is the best thing for us.

U3 engine will make porting a game between Xbox 360, PC and PS3 cheaper and less time consuming. This is good news. As long as I can play the games I want on my 360, I don't care if PS3 owners can do the same. Down with fanboyism!
Resident Evil OR Dead Rising will look great with U3.
Is Duke Nukem Forever using U3? Or U9? Or U-Balboa?
