Castlevania to breach the XBLA limit

360 News | Microsoft bend the rules a little.
Those of you wondering how Castlevania: Symphony of the Night would be able to fit into the 50MB Xbox Live Arcade limit need wonder no more, according to Gamespot Konami have revealed that the game will be breaking the 50MB limit.

Microsoft's group manager for Xbox Live Arcade, Greg Canessa stated that "By keeping the file size small for Xbox Live Arcade games, gamers can put one or more games on a memory unit and easily bring those games to a friend's house to share and play," Small file sizes also mean fast download times, making it possible to download and begin playing any Xbox Live Arcade game within one or two minutes."

Despite the fact that Symphony of the Night will exceed the cap, Canessa indicated that there is still a cap by stating "If any games do exceed 50 MB, it's for a very specific reason that would ensure that the gameplay experience is the best it can be, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is one of the most popular games of all time, and you can [bet] that you'll see similar high-quality games come to Xbox Live Arcade in the future."

Can we expect to see more games breaking the cap shortly then? It seems likely.

Brilliant! I'm glad that they're willing to bend the rules to facilitate high quality releases - especially when the one in question is SotN icon_smile.gif
Now, hows about a release date? icon_wink.gif

Special case rules suck. Half the fun of developing for a size limit is trying to fit alot in a small space. This is just a precedent setter. Sounds like Microsoft will eventually remove the size limit to keep in competition with everyone else if you ask me.

I was worried about how they would manage this, now all will be fine after this news.

Thing is Sotn was never originally 'developed' with a 50mb limit in mind, i think this is a wise decision.Sotn will be a major ace for ms and they need to bend the rules a lil for such a top tier game like this to keep it being an ace-rather then a 'joker'(street fighter?)

Agreed with Jibbs and Goober, part of the restrictions is what can make things interesting, although if it wasn't originally designed with those restrictions, compression (and subsequent deleting / removal) may make problems.

Take your HDD to a mate's place? Isn't that why it's removable?

I hope so, The demos are quite a deal bigger than 50 MB and people still download them. If the restriction was lifted to something like 200MB (or some other arbitary number) we might see some better quality XBLA games (IMO).

Then the price would also be higher too.

I actually wonder what the percentage of users with no HDD is. I mean, having a 64 meg mem card and having one 50 meg arcade title isn't really making a lot of sense anyway.

I reckon most of those without a HD(ie the tard pack) wouldn't have LIVE for a start anyways, whether it be they're too cheap to buy extra games/have a decent net connection(hence them buying the cheaper tard pack) or they aren't 'gamer' enough to even know about this LIVE nonsense and downloadable arcade games anyways.
