Gears of War sells 2 million units

360 News | Plus free downloadable content on the way?
Microsoft has confirmed via a press release that Gears of War has sold two million copies since its worldwide debut. This officially makes Gears of War the fastest-selling next-gen game of 2006 and the fastest-selling exclusive Xbox game of all time.

Michael Capps, president of Epic games stated that ""We've always held high hopes for 'Gears of War,' but we never expected such an overwhelmingly positive response from critics and gamers all over the world, I can’t describe how stoked our team is right now. Our fans can absolutely count on Epic to keep delivering new gameplay through Xbox Live.”

On the topic of new gameplay and content through Xbox Live, Mike Capps was asked by Spike TV how the company will be keeping Gears a top seller, he replied "We always take care of our customers, we always give them stuff for free, and we're going to keep doing that forever. That's how we do it, this is Epic."

If you haven't picked Gears of War up yet and want to know what it's all about then we suggest you have a read of our review.

YUSSSS.

Free stuff ftw! Knowing epic and being an avid UT2004 player, they'll be releasing an absolute ton of free stuff. Mainly maps which = awesome.

Waaaaaiiiiiit a minute...

Didn't they claim that Halo 2 sold 2 million on the first day?

Well I guess the poor old Xbox gamers have to buy something this Christmas as there is precious little else. Still it beats the pants of a Playstation christmas.

so, is that:
1) a confirmation that GoW isn't coming to PC (where Halo 2 is, and there's isn't "Exclusive")
2) ****-up in wording and should be "Xbox 360"?
3) uncovering an out-and-out lie?

personally, i'd hedge my bets that 2 is the correct one, but who know.

damn fast sales, in any case.

and damn good to see the Epic tradition continuing, especially in the face of having the perfect forum for charging for content.

You sure about that? I know pre-orders were over a million (something like 1.1 or 1.2m) but did it actually sell that many more on the launch day?

As for Obs' theories, I'd back #2 as well. It seems strange to word it like that if he was referring to all Xbox platforms.

About Halo 2:
http://news.com.com/Halo+2+clears+record+125+million+in+first+day/2100-1043_3-5447379.html

"The software giant on Wednesday reported sales of 2.38 million units for the game in the 24 hours since it went on sale in the United States and Canada at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday"

Mind you - I always called bull on that statement, since they counted pre-orders which hadn't been picked up as 'sold' within the 24 hours (which other launches haven't counted), but it seems pretty clear that Halo 2 sold more and quicker then Gears.

For exclusivity - Halo 2 is still currently exclusive.

#2 is most likely, yeah. Gears is a better game then Halo 2 though, so good for them.

The statement clearly said Xbox-Exclusive, it's probably meaning that GOW won't be coming to the PC.

1 million was pretty much guaranteed thanks to the work from the hype machine alone, but 2 million? Now that's a nice figure, thoroughly deserved too if you ask me. Wonder if they'll hit 3 million in the near future?

As for the downloadable content, I'm not aware of what Epic have done with their UT games in the past (with DC) but it sounds enticing, whatever it is. So bring it on I say! icon_smile.gif

DC sounds good, especially when free... and nice sales for GoW icon_smile.gif
