Halo 3 images revealed

360 News | Multiplayer action.
Bungie has released high resolution screenshots of Halo 3. The images first appeared in magazines a few weeks ago so it's good that the images have been posted for all to see.

Halo 3 is still a year or so away, but this hasn't stopped the hype machine from already beginning. A teaser trailer will be shown quickly on American television this month. and early next year a multiplayer public beta of the game will be released. It's set to be one of the biggest titles of 2007 and we'll be keeping a close eye on it.

We advise you to head to the Media Panel for a closer look at the screenshots. We'll report more on Halo 3 as soon as more information becomes available.

I am confident Halo 3 will look better than Gears. With Microsoft looking over the development, I have no doubts whatsoever.
That's a pretty big statement. I wouldn't be so sure, GOW is very hard to beat. Still, this is all early stuff, so we'll see how it turns out.

Yeah, topping GOW in the visual aspects will be hard but I can see Bungie doing it.
GOW's levels are pretty small(segmented and enclosed) also, so it will be interesting to see how Halo 3 will look with its huge open levels.

Next big one for me will be mass effect.
Wonder when that is coming out?

This is Bungie though, they're practically joined at the hip with the 360 hardware. I wish they hadn't released these screens as so many people obviously don't understand the concept of a development build. This build hasn't had all the fancy lighting features, final textures and models etc put in, so of course it looks like Halo 2.1!

You watch just how far this game will come along in say a year.. I have no doubt it will even beat Gears. Many times I have seen games that look average then turn into amazing and this is Bungie we are talking about. Think of it like Motorstorm.. its just amazing now.

Unless I'm mistaken, that's the first shot of Halo released back in 99. When the game launched in 01, we all know it looked much much better than that.

^ lmao I remember seeing that photo. Point taken - I just hope they overhaul it alot.

does anyone remember Gears of War graphics from a year ago...back in e3 2005. even a year ago, the game looked heaps better than these screen shots...

but cant lose faith now. they havent dropped the ball yet on there killer app. and the fact that theyve added another one to there killer library (GoW) is awesome.

but to be honest, i am intrigued by killzone 2. if ps3 can pull it off, it is a good sign of what things are coming for gamers...(only speaking in terms of graphics...i doubt gameplay will be much different from anything else, as is the case with anything out there now...)

Pffft... I might actually consider Killzone 2 a game once we finally get to see something in-game. Until then it's nothing but some vastly hyped up vapourware.

i know, i know... and i couldnt agree more... until it arrives, its just turd smoke and anal vapour... but squeezing graphics like that out of any console would be the mount everest of gaming. thats all im saying. If graphics like that come out of halo, or gears of war 2. it doesnt matter to me.

also, these halo screen shots are from an alpha build, which would probly be for testing animation, gameplay and level design. So for an alpha build, i guess its pretty sweet...

theres plenty of time to nail down the heavy stuff.

You're right, seeing the kind of graphics shown in that trailer in a console shooter would be amazing. I remain skeptical that we'll even get close to it even towards the end of this gen though.

But hey, I'd love to be proven wrong there icon_wink.gif

The graphics aren't very detailed but I can see the general direction they're headed in and to me it looks like Halo 1 (more organic and less tech)....I really couldn't be happier!! icon_smile.gif

I agree... I have always loved the halo color palette. It detaches the game from reality, making it a surreal experience. True escapist entertainment, without becoming childish in its final renders.

Compared to Gears of war, which almost to its detriment, has a very, very, very dirty and limiting color palette.

The enemies in Halo - purple, blue, orange etc... The enemies in GoW - sickly greenish white, dirty stale brown. Coupled with the environment being just as limited in color (from the parts ive played). It can become almost a burden to have to walk through these stages over and over again.

Halo is looking to be very, very expansive. maybe it will be Oblivion-ish in terms of its environment. which is a strong contrast to the tight and clostrophobic Gears of War levels.

Its great to see a variety of gaming experiences coming from the 360. (Cant wait for mass effect)

^ Are you serious? It's obviously the theme they were going for with Gears. I don't see this 'lack of colour' that you're talking about. I think it looks very 'pretty'.

I would take nothing from these screens but to show that they are heading in the right direction. For Halo 3 to look worse than GOW Bungie would have to totally fall off the Wagon - that Microsoft is pulling.

How many times does one have to say 'placeholder'?

^ A few more times, at least. Along with the words 'different art direction' apparently.

for the record, i love Gears of War....i mean like, Games are becoming a true art form on par with movie making...and as such follow the principles of design that govern all the visual arts..painting, photography and movie making.

I am by no means slagging Gears of War when I say its color palette is depressing...it is intended to depress & instill anxiety...because that is its intention, after all, it is an interactive sci-fi horror flick... worthy of sitting next to aliens, predator, species etc. in terms of story and even graphics/special effects (old school visual FX are a crack up to look at now)...

The camera work is first class. The jaws-like cello work in the musical score, the color scheme...are intentional and of good effect in enhancing the storytelling...

notice how even the blood coming out from your enemies torn and shredded carcases are a blackish red...(not the tomatoe sauce, hichly saturated red, or glowing plasma white or green of other games) This attention to detail in gears of wars art/design team is whats kicking everyones @$$ right now, and is a credit to the gaming industries artists.

its awesome to be able to take a game screenshot, and have it recieve the same amount of respect as a picasso painting, a rembrandt landscape, a Frank Frazetta fantasy art piece, a Peter Jackson, George lucas or steven spielberg movie...

Probably icon_razz.gif I've never played people like that on Halo 2 on Xbox Live. My friends however are a different story ("If this was a mouse I'd kick your arse!" "You f***ing hack, how'd you f***ing snipe me out of the ghost?!" etc.)
