Full versions of TV and Movies coming to the Marketplace

360 News | The Live Marketplace expands.
Microsoft has just announced that on November 22nd (to celebrate the 1st year anniversary of the Xbox 360) television shows and movies will be coming to the Live Marketplace. By the end of the year, up to 1000 hours worth of video will be available through the US Marketplace.

With movies, you'll be able to download the shows to rent or to buy and many of the programs will be available in high definition. Movies that Americans can expect to see before the end of the year include Mission Impossible III, Nacho Libre, Jackass: The Movies, The Matrix, Superman Returns and Batman Forever.

Microsoft has also partnered with a lot of television networks, including Adult Swim, CBS, Comedy Central, MTV, MTV2, Nick Toons, Nickelodeon, Spike TV, UFC, VH1 and Warner Bros. This means that shows like Friends, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Pimp My Ride, South Park, Survivor, CSI and Star Trek will all be downloadable.

The bad news is that this is strictly for America at the moment. However, we've contacted Microsoft, but it's likely this service will be available sometime next year in PAL territories. We'll report back as soon as it's confirmed either way.

That sounds pretty good, although I wonder what the pricing structure for TV shows would be?
Hopefully we get a service with a similar level of support.

Too bad you can't store much on a 20GB (14GB) HDD.

Its a cool idea though.

But still, it would be a great service to have at your disposal. Too bad we have to wait.

Indeed. Im having a bit of trouble setting it up though icon_confused.gif What I mean to say is I tried once at 3am, couldn't get in to work so I gave up icon_razz.gif Is there a guide how to set it up ?

Unless they use WMV I don't see how this can work on a 20 gig HDD.

Finally, my US Live subscription might actually be worth something.

Although, I agree about the storage problems - need to be able to archive it off the X360 HDD somehow. I wouldn't want to pay for something and then have to delete it because of a lack of space.

Actually I had problems with mine too, all I had to do is choose a different computer to connect to and select my account because there was two computer settings listed for my one laptop - really weird..

As for tutorials there dosent seem to be very many at all. Have you checked your computer software is allowing the 360 and are the folders you want to share selected?

Its good idea.

Sony probably won't be too far away as well. Anyway they have good content to offer. It will be an interesting tussle.

Don't forget the Cable TV owners will be a bit peeved but they have some very cool technology as well via Scientific Atlanta set top devices.

Sounds good, just hope this comes out here sometime soon (with content that we actually care for too) icon_biggrin.gif

This sounds like a great idea..I will wait till I find out the pricing first

Now all they need is a bittorrent client. Although it's probably already been done.

That is a pretty good point, but I think it may be better to look at a service like this as a rental. You download it, watch it, delete it. Just like you would rent a DVD, watch it, Return the DVD. You can not archive everything you watch on PayTV, you do not archive Rended DVDs.. so I tend to lump this new service into that sort of a category.

Depending on how the price structure works this just may be the thing to get me interested in actually subscribing to x-box live. I really like the flexability this could give to watching what is on offer. Instead of being in front of the TV when the show I want to watch is being broadcast I can just download it and watch it when I chose. No more leaving games on pause for two hours or more just to go watch Clerks! icon_smile.gif

It also will give me an opportunity to see some shows that only show here in Oz on PayTV, which I do not have access to.

Of course it all comes down to price and value. It may end up being just another thing that is a cool idea, but not worth the entry fee.

Which is why I never rent - only buy. What would I rather do, pay $6(?) for a new release overnighter, or pay $20-25 for the same thing and be able to watch it over again, loan it to family, etc?

And yes, I archive everything I watch on PayTV - rip it to PC and burn it off on DVD. Before that I used to store it on VHS. Using AutoGK, a normal TV episode comes down to 350Mb, so I can fit 12 episodes on a single disc. It's permanent (I should add that shows I really like I will also buy the proper DVD boxset when it is released the same as if I was interested in a movie).

But you can do that now through other means (mentioned above)... or you could tape it and watch it whenever you want.

Yes, well there is that, and the potential to watch shows before they are aired here, or shows that get canned in the US and never see the light of day over here. But I suspect it will be a regional thing and you'll only be able to watch shows that are aired here, around the time they go to air on the actual channel.

It'll work like the normal marketplace system, once you buy it's yours forever cause it's linked to your tag. Renting will allocate it your tag for x amount of days, just like the Zune.

MrAndyPuppy.. all valid points. Back in the days of VHS I used to tape TV shows intending t watch them when I was not in the middle of Mario64, or Trying to kill Sepiroth etc. Of course I ended up with over 400 VHS tapes in the house. A good quarter to a third of those went unwatched ever, and of the others.. well if I watched anything more that twice it mush have really REALLY impressed me.

Now in the days of DVD I can see this being a much more practical and unintrusive way to keep stuff around "in case I get to watch it".. but I pay so little attention to TV that usually when I am interested enough in a show to actually watch it.. it is already on DVD for me to purchase. icon_smile.gif

If I was as interested in TV as you quite obviously are, then I have no doubt I would do the same as you. If it was not for AutoGK I would never have seen Mythbusters for example. But as our TV 'addictions" seem to be at two different points of the spectrum, then I still believe that given there is 'value' in this new service I can definately see it being worthy of a more in-depth consideration.

This is, so far, the only thing that has me even remotely interested in x-box live. Unless it is REALLY good value to me, I will more than likely not bother with it either. heh icon_smile.gif

Unless Apple's just been really lazy getting TV and movie rights for the iTunes Store in countries that aren't the US, I can't see Microsoft having much more luck internationally.

What else would Microsoft possibly use but WMV?
