Xbox 360 sells over 100,000 consoles in Australia

360 News | Records broken, CDs too.
Microsoft has announced today, via a press release, that since its launch on March 23rd, the Xbox 360 has sold over 100,000 consoles, which makes it the fastest selling console in Australia to reach the mark.

Xbox 360 software has also set a new sales record in Australia, with 400,000 games sold in the seven months since launch. Microsoft's first party support of the Xbox 360 has obviously played a key part in the success of the console, but the top selling games for the console are actually Call of Duty 2, Saint's Row, Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter and The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion.

The new figures demonstrate that in its first seven months Xbox 360 has outperformed the PS2 in its first seven months in both hardware and software sales. Xbox 360 sold 100,000 console units in that period, compared to 78,000 for PS2. In terms of software, the margin is even wider; over 400,000 games have now been sold for Xbox 360, while only 190,000 games were sold for PS2 in the same period following launch. The figures do not include handheld consoles.

They probably have the record for most number of consoles that need to be sent in for repair.... stupid three red lights of death!

and beating the PS2 in the first seven months isnt hard. only SSX was worth getting back then and DOA2. mmm boobies.

and the fact that there are like 400,000 EB Games out now im sure helps.

Those comparisons to the PS2's opening months are quite interesting, very interesting even. Of course, comparing to years ago means nothing when there's a big fight coming up in the next few years.

Um is this really the truth and how do they go about finding these
statistics out? I mean if they only go off of shipped units then its a load
of crock as most of these units would be sitting in retailers shops not
in the consumers hand, alas the return rate would also be the highest
and you wont hear M$ tell that good news, Silly propoganda there as bad
as $ony

I am completely serious when I ask how many of these "100 000 sales" are actually just units that were returned and exchanged. No doubt MS would include them in the total figure.

A return wouldn't be counted as a sale.

GFK provided the stats, so they're based on SALES. Not returns etc,, real $500 / $650 sales.

The X360 premium pack is also $150 cheaper than the PS2 was during the same amount of time. 100,000 sales really doesn't surprise me when compared to 78,000 PS2 sales. The software sales margin is also understandable given the only good game on the PS2 for a while was SSX icon_razz.gif

Totally - gaming has become much more mainstream than it was back then. There are many more games shops around, and the dept. stores are stocking (at least a little) more than they used to. We'll see how this figure stands against the PS3 and Wii sales, then it'll be worth something.

so, given that the PS2 sold decently because it offered a reasonably priced alternative for a DVD player (at the time), what's the XBox 360's excuse?

well done MS. it surprised me, but those are some nice numbers.

(i'll agree about the PS2's launch software. it was a good 6 months before there was anything worth buying on PS2.)

Acording some to people the same applies to the 360 icon_cool.gif

There are lies, damn lies and then there are statistics.

We all know though that Australia, per capita is the heart of X-Box love. Why wouldn't that brand loyalty extend to the 360 even if there are no games worth playing (alright, one game worth playing)?

Those people just like to complain. 'sif the 360 didn't have any good games for the first 6 months ( considering its only been out for 7 )

Very interesting statistics, though. Obviously, the PS2's dominance didn't come from launch, it was thanks to Sony's brilliant strategising, marketing and consumer-targeting in the years after.

Microsoft have laid the groundwork, but it'll now be up to them to see if they can continue the momentum.

^ you could say that the PS2's dominance came through Sony laying the groundwork through the PS1.

and they then continued the momentum through to the PS2.

you could also say that your post reeks of fanboy. you might want to switch deodourant.

I wouldn't say that was fanboyism, it's pretty much fact. I hate Sony as much as anyone else (I've owned most consoles each generation, but never a Playstation), but it's pretty obvious Sony nailed the marketing of the PS1 and 2, especially the 2. The groundwork of the PS1 did set them up, but it was the way they captured a huge slice of the casual market that pushed units, and a lot of that was unique to the PS2 rather than an extension of the PS1.

How can they even remotly find this figure out?
Which retailers are included in this figure and how do they
determine what type of market share they have?

GFK takes the stats, as far as I know all retailers take part in this and GFK also produce the sales charts.

icon_eh.gif You're kidding yourself if you think the majority of businesses don't track their units sold, whether they be manufacturers or retailers.

LOL - all manufacturers keep track of units sold.

Well good luck to MS they have marketed the system well and generated a handful of titles that have people interested. It has a very good controller this time and the hi def output is nice eye candy.

Wii will have their chance in December so we shall see how they go. GC performed poorly in Australia so I think Nintendo would like to have a big Xmas 2006.

I'm guessing all those trade ins of a PS2 plus 37 games to get a free premium xbox 360 count also?

Man when i traded in my dud ps2 and 37 **** 5$ games, there were at least 5 people before me doing the exact same thing.
Shame alot of them had good games they were trading in like MGS3, pro evolution soccer etc.

So... is 'brilliant strategising' a new way to say 'lieing outright about their product to force competition out of the market'? 'Cause if it is, you're right on the money. icon_shifty.gif

Good on Microsoft, i've been pretty happy with the 360 so far. There has been a slow trickle of quality releases but alteast the choice is there.

Yeah, well done M$, I've enjoyed the 360 to no end.

Yes it did, BUT it was outselling the Xbox greatly until Microsft slashed the price of Xbox. Initial sales don't always determine if a console is successful.

Having this lead in the market has helped 360, but it was unchallenged. Of course Wii will have a big Christmas, it's new hardware. It all comes down to PS3, but both the 360 and Wii will have a huge headstart, then the war becomes nasty.
