Phantasy Star Universe open beta available now

360 News | Just don't try to download it on Tuesday.
Sega has announced on the official Phantasy Star Universe website that the PSU open beta is now available on Xbox Live. The beta is 940MB and you'll be able to play through until Wednesday October 18th. One day's play is going to be affected by the Xbox Live downtime which is currently scheduled for Tuesday.

Phantasy Star Universe is currently set for release on the XBox 360 from the 24th of November, so the beta is your chance to provide suggestions to the developers before the final game is released. If you want more information on the beta then we suggest you head over to the official site. We'll have more information on Phantasy Star Universe shortly, if you've played the game we'd love to hear your thoughts in our forums.

From what I played, you're not missing out on anything special. Although I did only play it for about 45 mins.

I realise that was intended to make me feel better, but I've been anticipating this game for over a year, so it didn't. icon_razz.gif

I'd love to get some in-depth opinions on PSU - I've been considering getting Gold for a while now and if the PSU beta was any good that'd be the thing to tip the balance.
Or I could just plug the Dreamcast in and play PSO instead, saving myself some money... =)

Can you still play the dreamcast version online? I thought they shut down the servers a while ago?

If you enjoy MMOs that dont have a very in depth battle system and repetitive monsters such as guild wars, then you will probably love it. For me I would prefer something with a bit more substance. I was on level 6 when I stopped playing.

The graphics are not something I would call next gen. They look like something the PS2 could produce. The worlds do look varied although there actually quite small and dont allow for much exploring except in the battle maps, which are quite bland. It works with a block system. Beat all the monsters in block 1, get the keycard - proceed to block 2. I found it really boring and more like a chore to complete these.

Hitting one button over and over again is not my type of thing, it would have been nice atleast if you could pull of different attacks. Weapons and armor are quite boring looking although they do allow for people to fight how they want - eg. One hand has sword, one hand has gun - or both hands have big gun or big sword. I spose thats something fun to play around with as you get more equipment on your journey.

So yeah, I dont think its something I would be buying. Especially when theres such quality titles like gears of war coming out closer to christmas.

I haven't downloaded the demo and basically won't bother seeing it is just a trial.I'll probably end up get the full version anyway seeing that I used to play Phantasy Star online HEAPS on the Dreamcast and craved more of that sort of action which never eventuated.

The one question i have though is does it still have the option pod thing that starts off small(behind your back hovering) and as you give it items it grows and changes in shape/form/power also affecting your stats.Weird food combos and careful feeding would lead to ultra rare versions of these pods that were super powerful. That for me as well as alot of people was what made PSO on dreamcast so much fun.

If the pod/option's not in it...i'm not in it.
Simple.

I have no idea, although I'd guess that they would have shut them down yonks ago. I never played PSO online, only off-line - I'm not much for online multiplayer (please don't lynch me).

Ganon - thanks for that! I'm not an MMO person, but from what you've said about it it sound just like PSO. And that, to me, is a good thing. Will have to keep my eyes on this.
