Believe it or not, Fuzion Frenzy 2 actually has a bit of a back story. Until four years ago, Fuzion Frenzy was the most popular tournament on Earth. However, due to the extreme competitiveness of the players, the leaders of Earth banned it. Recently, however, the world’s leaders have struggled with the problem of overpopulation, and have come up with a plan for the citizens of Earth to immigrate to space, the idea being that the Fuzion Frenzy tournament lures citizens to space; thus solving the overcrowding issue. Sure, the storyline isn’t strong, but the fact that Hudson even attempted to incorporate one into the game is appreciated.
One of the biggest differences in Fuzion Frenzy 2 is the fact that all of the mini games will also be playable online. So, if you don't have any friends around, you can still benefit from the instant playability of the title. The game will also support online leaderboards, so you can compete against your friends for the fastest times in any given event. From the main menu, you can select to play in a mini game frenzy or customise a tournament. The demo locks out every option except the mini-game frenzy, so we hopped in to take a quick look at what mini games will be available. Before playing any of the mini games, you actually need to select a player; you can select from Dub, Samson, Geena, Zak, Naomi or Jet. The three games that are playable are Conveyor Belt Chaos, Sumo Paint and Ice Treasure Hunt.
The first mini game we trialed was Conveyor Belt Chaos (try saying that ten times fast!). In this mini game, you need to carry crates over to your coloured square. It's also possible to steal crates from your opponent’s squares, but they can do this to you as well. If you see an opponent coming at your square then you can zap them, which immobilises them, so it basically comes down to who has the most crates at the end of the minute. The mini game wasn't exactly enthralling, and we've seen these type of things done quite a few times before in similar titles.
The next minigame is Sumo Paint. Your player is in a round ball on a tower up high. The objective is to use your ball to "paint" the squares on the ground your colour. Meanwhile your opponent’s are also able to paint the squares their own colour, so you have to try and stay on the platform whilst painting the arena with your colour. This is a fun mini game, although you're only punished for a few seconds if you fall off the arena.
The final mini game is Ice Treasure Hunt. Here, you're out on foot and you have a flamethrower. Crystals of ice will pop up on the stage with coins encapsulated in them, and the objective is to try and get as many coins as possible. This sounds a lot easier than it is though, because your opponent’s can also get the coins or use their flamethrower to knock you down. This is an addictive mini game and we can see it becoming a Live favourite, because you can hang back and attack players with your flamethrower or you can go in for the coin immediately.
Whilst the demo of Fuzion Frenzy 2 was really short, it definitely showed promise. It's going to come down to the quality of the mini games and how replayable they are. If Hudson designs the mini games so that they're addictive and simplistic, then Fuzion Frenzy 2 will be a massive hit online. We'll have more information on Fuzion Frenzy 2 shortly, so keep checking back; either way it's about time the Xbox 360 got a fun party game. For your convenience we've also posted a full list of the mini games in Fuzion Frenzy 2 in our forums.
