Epic VP Rein lays into Sony over next-gen claim

360 News | Says naughty word.
Epic VP Mark Rein, a man never exactly short of an outspoken opinion, has described Sony's claim that the PlayStation 3 "will kick off the next generation" as "bullshit". Rein's mini-tirade came in a speech promoting Gears of War at the Game Developers Conference in London. ”Sony says the next generation starts when they say so. I say, that’s bullshit," ranted Rein. "Gears of War is the first second-generation game for Xbox 360 and it looks very fine. You will never see launch titles that look this good.”

The Epic boss was also on the defensive about the longevity of Gears of War, after Internet reports had suggested the title would last for only ten hours. “Someone said that at TGS, but they were wrong," he said. "If you’re on the development team and you’ve played it 30 times then sure, you can get through it in ten hours but for first time players? It’s going to be at least 12 hours."

I love this:

My.God. 2 hours? HAH

Yeah, was about to comment on that.

I don't mind if it's a 10-15 hour single player game, as long as it's quality all the way and has a kick ass multiplayer to boot. I'm looking for Gears to be the next Halo 2.

Ah ok, so all those tech vids of the U3 Engine were using GOW models and such. I see.

The guy sounds like a dick to me!

Yea for me though 2 hours is actually quite a lot. Basically the more game-time the better, so good news that it's atleast 12 hours which means I might be able to get it going for about 15 (cuz I soak in lots of atmosphere).

Also I agree the guy sounds like a dick! It actually sounds to me as if he's saying "Ps3 won't kick-start the next-gen era...Gears of War will". icon_rolleyes.gif

10 hours is fine for a quality game. I finished RE4 udner 10 hours and loved every second of it.

I took that as "Sony speaks BS, the next-gen started with the first next-gen console launched, Gears of War is second-gen 360 game and none of the PS3's launch games look as good as it."

I'd say 12 hours would be for a "professional" gamer who rushes through everything.

True. It doesnt have to be long to be good.
It just helps

12 Hours is fine if its a quality game. I would have still bought RE4 if it were only 12 hours.

Yes 12 hours is fine, but not when saying the game could be finished by people who play it reguarly in 10 hours and then only 2 more hours for first timers. I know I finished RE4 in about 15 hours first go, 10 second and my best is about 3 or 4 now(infanate rockets).

There should be a greater gap than 2 hours for veterans and newbies for the game.

I endorse the "sounds like a dick" motion.

About the longevity...if the game is as good as he is hyping it, then it will warrant a few play throughs.

I dunno about you guys but i'm gonna break it down to 40 hours.
Instead of just mindlessly gunning and chainsawing through multiple victims I am going to try and see into their inner workings to get to the bottom of all this hostility and see if we can get the world powers to act on a proper course of action that will be extremely hostile but will also have in-depth studying of the mind/family life of the locust drone and find out what their gripe really is.

actually killing non stop for 10 hours sounds more fun. icon_razz.gif

Mr Rein came out batting for Sony with a well promoted PR piece about the benefits of Blu-ray only two months ago. The fellow from NVidia was the other ring-in with a similarly scripted article pushing Blu-ray as being essential for next gen consoles.

As both GC and XBOX 360 use ATI, it is clear that NVidia was spruking Sony in return for them choosing the RSX. Mr Rein from Epic did the article just a few days after Sony Online Entertainment licensed Unreal Engine 3 from Epic and SCE signed a partnership to promote the engine to other developers.

Now that Sony PS3 release setbacks & question over future market share have risked Epic's massive investment in UT 2007, Mr Rein is happy to jump beds & has chosen to brown nose MS in order to talk up sales of Gears and get a bigger push of UT 2007 onto the PC platform. Expect Mark to say that Direct X10 and Vista is the true next gen platform soon...

My point is that these people seriously lack credibility when they continually prostitute themselves like this.

I know its easy to take pot-shots at this guy. Yeah, he IS cocky, but when your in control of one of the three best ( technical ) game engines in the known galaxy, you can afford to be.

This guy, and most of the guys at EPIC, ID et-al, pull no punches when it comes to with working with technology. He as openly praised the big picture design of the XBOX 360. I believe, wasnt it Cliffy B, that said, even before the hardware was "formalized" and Sony were already tooting there upcoming system, "Make no mistake, Microsoft have a real beast/monster here".

He might very well be "protecting" his vested interest with GOW, but I doubt it very much. I think, sometimes, that all though most people view this as a sort of arrogance, he should at least get some pats on the back for essentially saying what most people who are genuinely into the tech end of consoles ( but not FanBots/Boys - whatever ) have known since day one. That is that the PS3 really has very little going for it over its major competitor. Graphically, processing, playmechanics etc.

Myself, and millions others Im sure, have been following these guys for the best part of atleast 12 years or more, so we know what they are on about - as much as we know what they are all about !!

Im sure Sony will make a great system, but just dont feed off the Sony Hype.

So heres three cheers to you Sir from me, even if Im the only one !!
Just make sure they dont turn to geers when I get GOW !!!
Oh well, just my 2 cents worth.

Take it easy guys !!!

I agree with Cookie...it's all business and any one of these guys will say whatever makes them/their company money! Simple as that! Hey i'd do it on company time too!
