MS makes Core 360 price cut official

360 News | And gives out prices for 360 camera and steering wheel.
Days after retailers unofficially knocked a tenner off its price tag, the Xbox 360 Core System has now been given an official price cut by Microsoft. The reduction from £209.99 (AU$525) to £199.99 (AU$500) may not be huge, but significantly it is the first time Microsoft has dropped the price of its next-gen platform since it was launched in Europe last December. Meanwhile, the Premium version of the Xbox 360 is to retain its current RRP of £279.99 (AU$700).

PAL regions outside Europe have yet to see a similar reduction, though with the Christmas season approaching - not to mention the launch of the PS3 and Wii - it may be worth keeping an eye on what Microsoft has planned.

Away from system price cuts, Microsoft announced what it'll be charging for a number of new peripherals, including the Xbox 360 camera (due out October 6th) and the Xbox 360 racing wheel (pencilled in for November, we imagine with Forza Motorsport 2 in mind). The details follow, though bear in mind the PAL prices we've added are merely direct conversions according to current exchange rates:
  • Xbox Live Vision Camera - £34.99 (AU$87)
  • Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel - US$149.99 (£80 / AU$198)
  • Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 - £34.99 (AU$87)
  • Habu Laser Gaming Mouse - £59.99 (AU$150)
  • Xbox Live Video Chat Gold - £54.99 (AU$137)
  • Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver for Windows - US$19.99 (£11 / AU$26)
  • Xbox 360 Faceplates (Halo, Viva Pinata, Forza Motorsport 2) - US$19.99 (£11 / AU$26)

What's the deal with...

Xbox Live Vision Camera - £34.99 (AU$87)
and
Xbox Live Video Chat Gold - £54.99 (AU$137)

Do you have to pay to chat online? Or is it included in the normal Xbox LIVE you buy?

No you don't have to pay extra to chat. The second one is a bundle that includes a headset, Live subscription, and a couple of arcade games.

The camera bundles both come with the camera, wired headset and UNO redemption code. The Gold comes with an additional 12 month Xbox Live Gold account.

A price cut is nice, but I'm still not going to buy an Xbox 360 any time soon. It's still too high.

LoL! For real the core version is $500 (now after the price cut)? That's such a rip! Atleast the core ps3 comes with a wireless controller (same as premium 360), a 20 gig hdd (same as the premium 360), and a blu-ray player for like $600 or $700 (aus). That's more than ($149 + $69 + however much it'll cost for hd-dvd) $200 value.

The core 360 is the biggest rip! It's way overpriced and pretty much useless (you will almost immediately need to spend money on a hdd or memory card cuz it's useless without one or the other).

^ Especially given that the premium can be found at Dick Smith for $599 + a carry bag!

I think more consoles need to come with carry bags.

The problem is the core ps3 isn't upgradeable like the core 360 (actual 360 console the only difference is the colour of the actual disk tray....premium version it's chrome and core version it's white).

To my knowledge Ps3 core will not have memory stick, sd card and flash card input as well as no hdmi and i'm not too sure about the Wifi. I've heard conflicting reports....some say it is in the core version and others say it's not. Can anyone confirm?

These core systems are a huge mistake! Imagine selling the Ps3 (core) on ebay? Like that's heaps less hardware and you'd have to write it on the listing...does not have etc etc...because obviously people will get used to the features of the premium version because they will be the standard.

Core systems....big mistake.

i agree with Ugh, Core Systems are clearly not worth the money, but are obviously there to make more money, since some people will only look at the price, not the features.

however, like Ugh also said, at least the X360 is essentially upgradeable from Core to Premium, with a bit of additional money later on, which is a plus.

The core 360s are a joke. To buy the hard drive for one alone is a good $100, and there goes your saving already.

Sometimes it just doesn't pay to be tight.

Does anybody actually have a core 360? Or were they made just to fill up shelf space.
