UK retailers snip 360 Core System price

360 News | Microsoft denies involvement.
Perhaps with one eye on the impending launch of PS3 and Wii, certain UK retailers have started cutting the price of the Xbox 360, with the Core System package now available for under £200 (AU$495). Meanwhile, Microsoft has been keen to deny the price reductions are part of its official plans, instead stating that the new price point is entirely down to retailers.

"Retail price is set by our retail partners," said a Microsoft spokesperson to Eurogamer. "Retailers are already selling the Xbox 360 Core System from £199.99, which we believe is outstanding value to consumers." We'd have to agree it's pretty impressive, especially considering the PS3 will cost UK consumers (at the very least) £425 (AU$1,054), due to the budget version of Sony's console not being confirmed for release in Blighty.

Alas, the price of the Premium System has yet to budge, and, considering this writer's just coughed up £280 for his, things can stay that way for a while, thank you very much Microsoft.

Still too overpriced for me, considering there's not one 360 game I really wanna play... and the Core package is still the Core package no matter how cheap it is.

Bah, that makes no difference to me. I don't want the core. I need the premium.

Umm so how much did it used to cost? I thought it used to be $399(aus)?

I spoke to a retailer at a dedicated games shop and they said the core 360 units are not wanted by anyone so they don't stock them. Cutting the price seems like a sound tactic to try and shift them as most people with half a brain will see the premium units and just buy those.

I'm hoping that with the release of the PS3 the 360 should drop in price and not just the core system - dying to play Oblivion

Hopefully the core system gets knocked to

Aus$399.95 or less for Christmas, that would easily make 2006 a Microsoft Christmas
