Half Life 2 coming to 360?

360 Rumour | Have American retailers let a head crab out of the bag?
Landmark PC shooter Half-Life 2 may be coming to Xbox 360 early next year, if online retailers' web pages are anything to go by. The websites of US video game retailers EB Games and Gamestop were recently updated with a not so mysterious listing for a 360 version of the game, apparently due out February 2007. Coming after a recent announcement by Valve, where they stated that they were going to work on titles for Microsoft's second system (they actually said "Whether developing a traditional FPS, RTS, RPG or delving into new genres, the Xbox 360 is a great platform for expanding Source and our game experiences,"), the listing seemed reasonable enough. But surely you announce a game before you send a schedule to retailers?

For their part, Valve spoke to IGN about the listing, saying "We've only announced development for 360. No specific titles to reveal just yet, but folks can expect to hear more before the end of this year". Certainly not a denial, but there is also the question of whether Valve would make their first 360 project a port of a two year old game that was also released on the original Xbox. On the other hand, the game's designers were apparently very unhappy with the Xbox port, so maybe they want to make things right with the 360 version?

We'll keep an eye out for more concrete info on the subject.

I'm amazed that a company such as value would be spending valuable man hours on something like this.

How about an Xbox 360 version of Halo 2? What about Halo 1? Where will this end?!?! How abouts we just remake every game regardless of the fact that the previous version only came out a year ago?!?

Looks like valve have figured out the EA way of doing business. Good on them cuz it's just another money-hungry corp I can stay away from....which makes life cheaper for me.

So how much will this "360" version be? $100? $150?

Honestly, many people would sooner buy the cheaper Xbox version considering a high number of people thought that it was just as good as the PC version (excluding graphics looking better on PC).

My mates and I did a test (if you go into the 'my gaming setup' forum and look at Xcs:sive's setup...you can see the TV we used to compare it)...we had the xbox version and the pc version running side by side and the only differences were the fact that the pc version was running at a higher resolution.....so the textures were a little cleaner and lines a little less jaggy. Also in the Xbox version towards the end where you fight all the striders and stuff the frame rate dips pretty badly (and i'm not someone who would normally complain about frame rates cuz they don't seem to bother me much....but this was hardcore).....in all honesty though if you made it that far...chances are you were gonna finish it.

Anyways....in my honest opinion the Xbox version was complete....reviewers and the actual developers said they were happy with the product back then....what's changed now?! Oh yea....the dollar symbols in their eyes. If Valve are saying they were dissapointed with the Xbox version then did they lie to sell the product back when it was released? Or are they lying now?!

Also there is a the small chance that it might not be getting remade at all....in which case i'd be a little out of line (ok...maybe a lot).

I just really hate this corporate bulls*** cuz it's what ruins good companies.

Agreed. I can understand them porting it to a console the first time. But then doing it a second time... On the same platform! Is just plain stupid. I say the same platform because the Xbox 360 can play the Xbox version.

Australian XBox360 Magazine is the biggest piece of **** I've ever read, full stop. I get all the magazines we shrink out from work, and I HATE that magazine. It's unfortunate, because I just end up getting pissed off at the 360, even though it's a quality piece of hardware.

I can't say I have a lot of experience with the Xbox 360 and Xbox Live, but I would've thought the reasoning behind this was pretty simple.

Firstly, is the Xbox version of Half Life 2 even playable on the 360? Last I heard there were some serious glitches about halfway through the game when played on the "backwards compatable" 360 console that prevented you from progressing any further.

Secondly, the 360 version should have improved graphics, preferably at a smooth 60fps instead of 30, as well as at a higher resolution.

But possibly most importantly, the new installments which are being readied for the PC version could be released for the 360 version through the Xbox Live Marketplace.

EDIT: Actually, I may be wrong about that point. From kotaku.com:

"Actually, we're curious about this. Early 2007 is when Episode 3 should trickle out, finishing off Half-Life 2's episodic quasi-sequel. It may not make a lot of sense for Valve to redo its only failure for a next-gen console. But maybe they'll release Episodes 1 through 3 on the 360 when it's all been trickled out on the PC?"

^ i haven't played it on my 360 because it's quite old.

I can understand them releasing the episodic content on the 360 but we don't need the whole game again. I just wish they would use such valuable time to make something new!! There aren't enough good developers out there as it is, having them spend time on ports/rehashes is an absolute waste!

I wouldn't mind if HL2 came to the 360...on one condition though.

It has to have all the funky add-on mods such as pythagoras theory, garys' mod,cs:s,HL2:DM etc.

Now that would be cool....especially for all the people that have never used Garrys' mod.
Also chuck on the Sin episodes oh and dark messiah of might and magic as well.

That's the only way I'd buy it for Xbox360. icon_biggrin.gif

What about Xbox 360 owners who didn't own a Xbox and a decent PC?
Ohh in that case....yea they should! I would also like Doom 3 remade cuz I think the lighting could've been done better and the framerate could be a bit more solid, and when the next xbox comes out I would also like Quake 4 remade cuz that just wasn't done properly as we all know. Also I would like the first Half-Life remade for Ps3 cuz that wasn't done properly on Ps2 (where was the online mode?!?.....sheesh), I can't wait to play the original counter strike online.....man I bet all those ps2 owners that never got to experience this are hanging!!

While we're at it....I would like Resident Evil 4 remade for Gamecube with Seperate ways cuz that's not really fair....especially for people who are resident evil nuts and don't have a ps2.

Should I go on?

EDIT: You could actually buy Half-Life 2 for Xbox and play it on the Xbox 360 because it's on the backwards compatibility list.
