Tony Hawk Project 8 images

360 News | The Birdman returns to non-Nintendo systems too.
Ever since Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, Neversoft's premiere franchise has been a totally multi-platform affair, where every version was released at about the same time and was pretty similar, no matter what platform you played it on. Indeed Hawk 2 and 3 (which both straddled the last generational change) appeared on no less then six platforms each, and the substance of each version was the same no matter the console (or computer) you played it on. But now it seems Activision has decided to split the series in two - one half for Nintendo platforms, and the other for non-Nintendo platforms. The arcade-like Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam will be coming to Wii, DS and GBA, and the tentatively titled Tony Hawk's Project 8 will be the version you can play on Xbox, PlayStation 2, PSP, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. So from now on, when some kid asks you if you've played the latest 'Tony Hawks' your answer will require some addendums.

We've managed to get some screenshots of the next gen build of Tony Hawk's Project 8. These screens will apparently be representative of both the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions, and they're looking good. The next gen versions are being built from the ground up with all new animations and physics, so veterans will finally see the end of the recycled sequences they've seen so many times. The reason for this is that next gen graphics requite much smoother animation than canned movements, and Neversoft is promising that anything up to 20 animations can be ready to blend together, creating a more seamless character movement.

The environments will also be more dynamic, with more people and features then ever before, and challenges will be divided into the categories 'Am', 'Pro' and (ahem) 'Sick'. In terms of game structure, Project 8 follows in the footsteps of the last few games by having a story element about a new skater trying to become a pro yadda yadda yadda. Some people would rather just play as Mike Vallely and Eric Koston, OK fellas?

Tony Hawk's Project 8 is due out sometime late this year for all non-Nintendo platforms.

I know what I'm talking about. The first game was exclusive to PS1 for many months, and by the time it was ported to other platforms (and then only two - Dreamcast and Nintendo 64) Tony Hawk 2 was just around the corner. Part 2 was on six different platforms (PS1, Dreamcast, PC, N64, Xbox and GBA) in a much shorter time, and since then has launched near simultaneously on every available platform.

What ticked me off in the latest Tony Hawk's games was not the recycled animations but all those ridculous combos that made the game a bit too easy and sadly it hasn't changed. In the latest Offical PS2 magazine they said that you would be able to break bones in your body in add to your combo's....
