The game begins with your character walking into the middle of a gang war (as you do). The character survives and is rescued by the Saints. After this you're recruited by the Saints and life is never the same. From this point forth, you're able to customise your character and there are a lot of options. Some of the options include ethnicity, hair colour and tattoos. The character customisation is very impressive and you will want to take your time with this customisation because you will be staring at this character for quite a while.
The game takes place in one large city that is larger than Vice City but smaller than San Andreas. Parts of the city appear to be unlocked by taking out rival gangs, so if you want to see the whole city then you will need to take down every gang. The game also contains a real time damage system, so your vehicles will get smashed up, which is rather impressive. There are a lot of car customisation options as well. Overall it doesn't really feel like the game was pushing the Xbox 360, so the frame rate was very steady.
The whole game is centred around respect and notoriety. If you kill people or commit crimes then you will gain notoriety and the cops will come after you, as will rival gangs. The more notoriety you have, the more aggressively you are chased down. It's actually possible to go to the plastic surgeon to customise your appearance to get rid of the stars. We've come a long way since having to just change clothes to evade the police...
Saint's Row actually contains an online mode that sounds quite appealing. It's possible to go online with other players and form gangs for street warfare. Apparantly it will be possible to have six-on-six matches with two gangs going at it, but we'll see how that turns out.
Saint's Row certainly has some potential, but we're still a little sceptical as to whether it will be a fun game or whether we'll be thinking of another title that's due in 2007. It doesn't seem like Volition Inc. have innovated too much with this title, but there could be extras that we haven't heard about just yet. The Xbox Live bonuses could just be the saving grace, but we'll definitely be monitoring Saint's Row with interest.
