Saint's Row Preview

360 Preview | We go hands on with Saint's Row. GTA clone or something else?
Grand Theft Auto clone. There, we've said it and now we don't have to say it again. We're really glad we got that out of the way. Every time a title comes out with the same kind of premise of the aforementioned title, the developers make a claim that attempts to justify the development of the game. And in Saint's Row, we're told it's third person gang warfare that's the main appeal. We recently had an opportunity go hands on with Saint's Row and although it may not be an innovation, but it may fill the gap, at least until October 2007.

The game begins with your character walking into the middle of a gang war (as you do). The character survives and is rescued by the Saints. After this you're recruited by the Saints and life is never the same. From this point forth, you're able to customise your character and there are a lot of options. Some of the options include ethnicity, hair colour and tattoos. The character customisation is very impressive and you will want to take your time with this customisation because you will be staring at this character for quite a while.

The game takes place in one large city that is larger than Vice City but smaller than San Andreas. Parts of the city appear to be unlocked by taking out rival gangs, so if you want to see the whole city then you will need to take down every gang. The game also contains a real time damage system, so your vehicles will get smashed up, which is rather impressive. There are a lot of car customisation options as well. Overall it doesn't really feel like the game was pushing the Xbox 360, so the frame rate was very steady.

The whole game is centred around respect and notoriety. If you kill people or commit crimes then you will gain notoriety and the cops will come after you, as will rival gangs. The more notoriety you have, the more aggressively you are chased down. It's actually possible to go to the plastic surgeon to customise your appearance to get rid of the stars. We've come a long way since having to just change clothes to evade the police...

Saint's Row actually contains an online mode that sounds quite appealing. It's possible to go online with other players and form gangs for street warfare. Apparantly it will be possible to have six-on-six matches with two gangs going at it, but we'll see how that turns out.

...bit of a theme, then.

Saint's Row certainly has some potential, but we're still a little sceptical as to whether it will be a fun game or whether we'll be thinking of another title that's due in 2007. It doesn't seem like Volition Inc. have innovated too much with this title, but there could be extras that we haven't heard about just yet. The Xbox Live bonuses could just be the saving grace, but we'll definitely be monitoring Saint's Row with interest.
Overall:
Saint's Row looks like it may be a lot of fun, we just hope it isn't too much of a clone though.

Can't say I'm excited about Saint's Row. GTA clones have never held my attention for very long.

Im well excited about it icon_biggrin.gif I think the physics and dynamic of the gameplay is going to be Alot more Free Roam than any of the GTA series yet, even so far as SRow will be operating on a different engine altogether "rag-doll system" comes to memory as one of the engines theyre using.

Any News on a Release Date at All ???
Please.

My EB here says 1st of August, Is it coming any Soooner?

If not Prey on 14th July should keep me fulfilled.
Picked Up a copy of Rockstars Table tennis for 360 today, and if the graphics theyre using on table tennis they can apply to GTA4 its set to be a few Reaallly Pretty games coming outta RS.
Still though Table tennis - LOTS AND LOTS OF FUN!

Hmm... I've often discussed GTA with people and we've always come to the conclusion that larger areas > better graphics. Having a map smaller than SA is just a step back for me, no matter how good the graphics/physics are.

I think it depends on the gameplay, map size doesn't worry me. I enjoyed Vice City way more than San Andreas.

Did you Guys play Total Overdose on xbox and PS2?

well I did and I liked it so much I bought a Copy for each, that was a well cool game on a MUCH smaller scale than any of the GTAs and I enjoyed it Much more than any of the GTAs too, But again same Genre, (Much like JimDash says) I didnt like the way San Andreas was set out much Like a Sims game with little freedom away from the missions opposed to Vice City where there was ALOT more freelance stuff to do.

From what I understand Saints Rows going to Have a VERY good AI engine in it where the City and Its people remember you and your crimes etc. and your progress in the game is due to getting A Reputation, and lots of other Kool Sh!t like going to a Plastic Surgon to get rid of your notariety and more decision based Gamestyle.

And Another Great thing Whos not looking forward to Getting online and making up your own Gang of Six and Dukeing out in Saints row? icon_razz.gif I know I am So come on Bring the game:P

having people remember your crimes? that's not good AI. they just code in that the more crimes you get, the more cops there are. simple. oh and going to a plastic surgeon to lose the cops is no different than going in a spray booth or clothes shop. there's nothing ground breaking.

I think the All the Next Gen development tools has alot more stuff than we have seen to date, Its Not really the same old thing over again so much as A new generation in AI that will be smarter than any gta so far, It speaks for itself really in the fact that the gameplay is designed with that "Oblivion style" Living breathing world around you and Its not just the cops and wanted levels etc. its more in the way there is room and more freedom now for game companys to make it so that pedestrians and CG characters have a better sense of AI and are free thinking.
Also It'll be great to have the online capability of getting your own gang of 6 Mugs together and wreaking havoc.
