E3 2006: Microsoft shows off HD-DVD player for Xbox 360

360 News | Due for Christmas 2006 release.
At it's pre-E3 press conference today, Microsoft unveiled the HD-DVD drive peripheral for the Xbox 360. The drive, which closely resembles a miniaturised, more compact Xbox 360 in appearance and which will allow users to watch HD movies, is set to launch in time for Christmas 2006. There's been no word yet on pricing, or on how it will attach to the Xbox 360 itself.

It seems likely that Microsoft had one eye on Sony when it came to opting for a pre-Xmas release; the PlayStation 3 launches worldwide this November, and will be immediately capable of playing movies on a rival HD format, Blu-Ray. And, although we may yet be waiting a few more months for HD movies to arrive en masse, Microsoft is offering the first ever HD movie downloads via Xbox Live Marketplace from now. The first HD production is to be the first half of a "docu-drama" entitled Gears of War: Road to E3. Haven't a clue what that's about.

More as soon as we get it, including the first images of the player shortly.
