Rockstar announces Xbox 360 exclusive...

360 News | ...and it's table tennis.
Question: what's the next logical step for a developer that's created Manhunt, the Grand Theft Auto series, Smuggler's Run 1 and 2, Midnight Club 1, 2, and 3, Red Dead Revolver, and The Warriors? More guns, violence, dodgy mods, questionable portrayals of women and free-roaming, go-anywhere environments? Well, apparently not, because Rockstar surprised just about everyone yesterday by announcing that their next title would be a...uh, table tennis game.

The new project - full title Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis - is currently in development at the studios of Rockstar San Diego, and is set to be an Xbox 360 exclusive. The title has been in development for a year now, and is set to be released in the US this May. But why the sudden change of focus on Rockstar's part? Well, according to Rockstar's Executive Producer and President Sam Houser, the project came about "because we absolutely love table tennis and wanted to try and make something that could show the audience what could be possible - on a relatively focused level - in the next generation of videogames."

Fair enough we guess, and we have to confess we'll be keen to see how this turns out; certainly, we can't recall any other table tennis games from the annals of videogame history (though as always, reader contributions in the comments thread are welcome and no, Pong doesn't count). Anyway, to see the first four images of the game in action (as well as a brief interview with Sam Houser, which we nicked the above quote from), head over to IGN's article on the title.

Pass. Wake me when they realise the mistake they're making by not releasing it on the Rev.

Konami's Ping Pong from circa '85 was a decent Table Tennis game.

There were some quite decent 8-bit conversions too -- on the Imagine label, at least in Europe.

Somehow I get the idea what table tennis has slightly more depth of gameplay than pong, Wil. Just somehow. icon_wink.gif

Also, if that's a full priced game, the developers are silly. Tetris totally belongs on the live arcade.

Hopefully, this new game title from Rockstar Games won't be blamed for certain sexual and violent acts.

Nice graphics. The game won't be full priced.

Don't understand how this game can be exciting though...I mean its table tennis. I'd rather go in the shed and have a legit game.

Surprisingly, I actually agree with GTPod. (icon_razz.gif)
Hopefully they choose to port it over, or make a new version of the game for the Revolution.

Making a Table Tennis game is easy, making a good Table Tennis game is hard. It will be interesting to see how this turn out to be.
