Perfect Dark Zero Preview

360 Preview | We shed the light on the flagship X360 title, including the latest images.
The sequel to Perfect Dark has an incredible story behind it in itself. Originally scheduled for release on the GameCube, development was transferred to the Xbox when Microsoft purchased Rareware. After seemingly disappearing under the radar for months (and with a lot of speculation that the game itself was simply vapourware) Microsoft announced the game would be launching right alongside the Xbox 360 when it comes out in the UK and the United States in December.

Since then, a deluge of information has been revealed by Microsoft. Ironically, gamers really haven't been kept in the dark regarding some of the game's features. The game itself is a prequel to the events that happened in the Nintendo 64's critically acclaimed Perfect Dark (hence the Zero at the end of the title).

A greater emphasis has been put on character development and story this time around. Whilst it's often captivating to play a game and discover the story yourself, we're sure Rare have included a few twists and turns. In the game, a secret war has begun between shadowy corporations bent on world domination. Joanna Dark and her father, Jack, are caught up in the fight for the planet's future.

Just like in the game's predecessor, players will take control of a (visually revamped) Joanna Dark, as she aspires to be the perfect agent. The game world should take advantage of the Xbox 360's power and it should be fully interactive; aside from this we can also expect a super smooth frame-rate. All environments will be rendered in real time, and those who often feel claustrophobic by the levels in first person shooters will be pleased to know the environments are very expansive.

Those of you who want to use the Xbox Live service with their new console will be pleased to know that Perfect Dark Zero has been developed to take full advantage of some of the new features of the new Xbox Live service. Up to fifty players can play online at once, and the game will include tournaments and rankings. There is no word yet on potential downloadable content but we wouldn't be surprised if Rare included it as a late inclusion, just to lure gamers over to the 360 Live service.

The game will also support offline multiplayer. Only two multiplayer modes have been revealed so far and they are 'Death Match' and 'Dark Ops'. Death Match is fairly self-explanatory, whereas Dark Ops is a little different. This mode gives the player a set number of rounds and weapons, and cash is earned incrementally for kills. We're hoping Rare include some truly innovative and unique multiplayer modes, and if they do this could quickly become one of the most popular multiplayer titles, similar to how Perfect Dark was to the Nintendo 64.

The game hasn't forgotten its roots, and the weapons in particular will pay homage to the past (or the future, we're already confused). Many of the classic weapons and gadgets from the original game have reportedly made the cut. Rare has been characteristically quiet about what will and won't make the cut, but we've managed to find out that the RPG and Laptop Gun from the original Perfect Dark will make an appearance, as will a rifle, handgun and sniper rifle. However, this isn't even touching upon 10% of the weaponry and Rare are promising that the game will include some very different weapons.

Vehicles, which have become a staple of first person shooters in recent years (and which did briedly feature in the original Perfect Dark of course), will be featured in the game. There is also going to be a jetpack, a hovercraft and a motorcycle, which should at least ensure plenty of manoeuvrability around the levels.

Perfect Dark Zero is to form a part of the Xbox 360's 'Christmas portfolio' when it launches in the UK in December, and it's likely to be a launch title when the console hits Australia next year. A limited edition copy of the game will also be available. The second disk is confirmed to include a video feature on the art of the game, a music track from the game and a Perfect Dark heads-up display skin for customising the Xbox 360.
Overall:
We don't really know whether this is going to blow our socks away like it is supposed to, but we're still looking forward to finding out.

oh, when you said "in the left", i thought it was referring to the left hand.

i assume then, you mean the HUD thing?

i think it looks like the ammo counter for the weapon in her left hand, since there's a 3, and 3 bars (representing 3 "clips" and "ammo in clip" respectively) but since that's the only shot i've seen of dual-wielding in game, i can't confirm.
