Xbox 360 Live officially priced for Europe

360 News | Plus: you won't need a credit card to pay! Hurrah!
It's official, folks: £39.99 or €59.99 will buy European Xbox 360 owners a 12 month Xbox Live Gold membership when the console launches later this year, according to a statement released by Microsoft earlier today. Best of all, it looks like you'll no longer need a credit card to access the Live service, a move that should both prove popular and widen the potential audience for Microsoft's online gaming service.

The Xbox Live Gold package will allow gamers to play games online, as well as make use of the 'matchmaking' and 'feedback' tools. It'll also allow you to access 'exclusive privileges and rewards on Xbox Live Marketplace', whatever they might be. Xbox Silver will be free of course, and should allow players to create a gamertag and profile, send and receive voice and text messages using the Xbox Live headset and download trailers, demos, new levels and other extra game content from Xbox Live Marketplace.

However, there's no plans to launch the Xbox Live Gold Premium packs (that'll be available in North America and which come with a headset and a free Xbox Live Arcade game) in Europe. Which annoyingly means that Europeans will probably have to cough up extra coinage for a headset. Grrr. Still, we shouldn't grumble too much - £39.99 / €59.99 is, after all, not dramatically more than what U.S customers will be paying, and it matches the figure that Microsoft charged for a 12 month Live subscription on Xbox 1. Talking of prices:

    Xbox Live Gold
  • 1 month subscription: £4.99 / €6.99
  • 3 month subscription: £14.99 / €19.99
  • 12 month subscription: £39.99 / €59.99
Unsurprisingly, we've no information yet on prices for Australia, where the Xbox 360 is expected to launch in early-2006.
