Pre E3 2005: Xbox 360 Peripherals

360 News | We take a look at what you'll be able to pick up when the Xbox 360 launches.
With any new console announcement comes a fact sheet outlining the peripherals that will be available with the new console, well, we recieved the peripheral sheet today, which outlines exaclty what you'll be able to pick up when the XBox 360 launches.

Faces:

Much like the stand was for the Playstation 2, the interchangable face plates seem like a gimmick for the Xbox 360. Gamers are able to purchase "faces" for their Xbox 360 to change the design of their console. The fact sheet actually encourages gamers to "pick up copies of the collectable limited edition faces", we can imagine the amount of money some of these "faces" will go for.

Memory Unit:

Yes, the Xbox 360 has a upgradedable, removable hard-drive, but there is still a memory unit for those who like to take their save games with them. The memory units will actually plug into the Xbox 360 itself this time, and up to two can be placed in the console. The memory unit has a capacity of 64mb (7 times the capacity of the Playstation 2's memory unit).

Xbox 360 Universal Media Remote

Those who purchased the Xbox the first time and felt a little ripped off because they had to buy a remote control just to enable DVD playback will feel very relieved. The Xbox 360 Universal Media Remote is an optional extra, DVD playback will be possible without the remote. Some of the features of the Xbox 360 remote include:
  • Power your Xbox 360 system on or off without leaving the couch.
  • The Xbox Guide Button allows for easy navigation of the Xbox Gamer Guide.
  • The Xbox 360 Universal Media Remote includes control buttons for your music, pictures, and more.
  • The Xbox 360 supports progressive-scan for DVD playback functionality, including a control for opening and closing the tray.
  • The remote supports universal TV and console functionality, including volume and mute buttons and up-and-down channel changing.
  • Windows XP Media Center Edition Button and Media Center Edition functionality are featured
  • A, B, X, and Y buttons are included for basic control of your Xbox 360 system, even without a controller.
  • Numbered and backlight keypad gives you full functionality, even in the dark.

This is a pretty powerful remote, that is significantly better than the original Xbox's remote.

Xbox Live Camera

The XBox 360 will support the XBox Live camera directly out of the box. The Xbox Live camera seems very similar to the Eyetoy and features:
  • High-end online camera supports up to VGA 640x480 video at 30 frames per second and takes 1.3-megapixel still photos.
  • The camera includes a microphone that connects to the controller, so everyone in the room can chat online with their friends.
  • The camera supports built-in video chat and video messaging on Xbox Live.
  • Your face can be imported into games and can also be placed next to your name on leader boards for even more recognition or fame.
  • Chat with your friends while you play online in Xbox 360 games as well as in the Xbox Live Arcade.

Xbox Live Headset:

An Xbox Live headset will also be available, which is practically the same as the original headset, except it is a little clearer.

Xbox 360 Controller:

The controller will be available with a cord or wirelessly, the cord will be nine feet and is for those who don't want to keep rushing out to purchase batteries. There is an all new level of rumble control, with gamers able to choose from full, medium, low or off.

There you have it, a summary of all the peripherals that will be available day and date with the launch of the console. PALGN will have more information on the Xbox 360 as soon as it becomes available.
