Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition Review

360 Feature | They swear this is the last one.
So, remember when Capcom said that Super Street Fighter IV would be the very last Street Fighter IV revision? Well, they then released a Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition for the Nintendo 3DS. That was fair, as it was simply a port for the 3DS, but it did have some exclusive features! We will let that slide, but wait! Capcom released the game in arcades, after first releasing it on PlaySation 3 and Xbox 360, this time under the name of Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition. That was still fair, but - hang on - it had revisions and - wait for it - four new playable characters. Capcom then went on to say that the new content would remain exclusive to arcades, because it offered that unique experience, and that the console version of Super Street Fighter IV would still be the most balanced and polished. Dare we say it, but the Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition add-on is out on Xbox Live Marketplace for 1200 Microsoft Points. This upgrades your copy of Super Street Fighter IV, and furthermore, it is out right now in stores in disc form, with an all new awesome box art. Yes Capcom, you are great at keeping promises, just like how you kept the promise of Resident Evil 4 remaining a Gamecube exclusive, with the condition of an employee chopping his head off if that promise was broken. Hold on - why is his head still on?

Well folks, for the second consecutive year, we are blessed with another Street Fighter IV expansion pack. This one adds four new characters to the roster, and introduces some revisions to the character balance and mechanics. It also has some improvements to the replay system and online community presentation.

The main meat of this new expansion is obviously the four new characters. Joining Makoto, Ibuki and Dudley from Street Fighter III series are the twin brothers, Yun and Yang. They both certainly are worthy additions to the roster, and offer a unique play style. With these characters it’s all about sharp, quick and decisive blows. They move really fast and their hits are rapid and pin-point, and they also have unique counter abilities, such as being able to stop a fireball (projectile) attack with their bare hands. They’re both pretty similar, but differ from each other a lot more than Ryu and Ken, and that’s really saying a lot. The game also adds new boss type characters, Evil Ryu and Oni.

Evil Ryu has appeared in the Street Fighter series before, but his latest carnation is perhaps his most impressive yet. With the murderous look, evil aura and gory details, he’s a pretty bad-arse looking guy that can certainly send a quiver down any opponent. His play style can be best described as a mix of Ryu and Akuma, but his Super and Ultra attacks have a more intense and destructive presentation.

Oni is a new standalone character, and we don’t know anything about his back-story, but the resemblance with Akuma is pretty obvious. His play style can best be described as a mix of Akuma and Gouken. Interestingly, his fireball eventually vanishes after being thrown, much like Dan’s fireball, but it certainly travels a much longer distance, just not as long as a standard Ryu fireball. Other than that, it is a powerful move, just like the rest of his destructive arsenal. His Ultras are by far the most powerful, and will leave a sense of awe in players each time they connect these breathtaking moves. The man is an absolute relentless beast, and one that players will enjoy using.

They be ugly.

The four additional characters are a welcome addition to the already amazing roster, and the new revisions and improved balancing don’t hurt either. But is it worth 1200 Microsoft Points? The answer is a resounding yes for those who still regularly play Super Street Fighter IV. You will need this upgrade in order to continue competing with the extremely active community, which will not even hesitate to grab this upgrade. Even if you are a casual player, the new characters actually justify the admission, while Evil Ryu may seem all too familiar, Yun, Yan and Oni really freshen things up. If you’re going to play Super Street Fighter IV, then you’ll obviously need this expansion.

Super Street Fighter IV is still one of the best fighting games out there, and is still widely played. It’s definitely worth upgrading with the Arcade Edition. As for newcomers, it might actually be better to find a cheap copy of Super Street Fighter IV and download the expansion, rather than purchasing the disc version. Overall, Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition is a worthwhile purchase for gamers who still like taking Super Street Fighter IV for a spin.

Worth buying? Yes

I hope they go for a fourth year. It's the greatest game of all time.

I am glad they are too, reminds me of all the various iterations of SF2 that came out in the early 90's. I sold the orignal SF4 ages ago, might be worth picking this up to replace it.

I use my 360 game pad, recently switched to the silver special edition, sure makes life easier and i change the dpad from the alternate variation depending on which character i am using.

I have a TANK arcade stick, but i am not very good with it (it improves my defence by 70-80%, but i can't do as many moves with it as i can on the 360 pad).

Will be jumping to the pc version when it is released. I won't be getting the ps3 AE disc for some time, if ever. I learned my lesson with SSFIV - even though i imported it and it was much cheaper than local pricing, i barely played it, compared to the 360. It's funny though as i've played SSFIV on the 360 a lot more over the last few weeks, than i have over the last couple of months (being hyped up about AE pre release).

I normally like having physical copies of my games, so I went and traded in Vanilla and Super to get $22 towards AE. No way in hell I'm gonna pay another $40 for it. This generation of rehashes automatically makes me think of AVGN's rant of which was basically where's "Street Fighter: The Good Edition". Anyways, I'll still have to follow SF4 news closely to see if yet another addition hits and I can trade in the previous one asap for as much credit as possible.

This is definitely a solid game, but its not going to pull me away from KOFXIII or MK9 anytime soon(or ever).
