Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare details

360 News | Saddle up zombie.
A press release from Rockstar has revealed some details about the upcoming DLC for Red Dead Redemption, titled 'Undead Nightmare Pack'.

The new content is said to enhance the single-player campaign, where the player will take control of John Marston as he attempts to find a cure for a zombie plague infecting the beautiful landscape. The press release goes on to say that the new DLC will feature 'brand new gameplay mechanics, weapons, zombie animals, mythical creatures and even a brand new secret location'. That's right, zombie animals and mythical creatures. There will also be new multiplayer modes, but the specifics will be announced in the coming weeks.

The Undead Nightmare Pack will be available to download via the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live simultaneously, priced at AU$15.95 and 800 MSP (AU$13) respectively. There's also some freebies coming your way in the form of the 'Hunting and Trading Outfits Pack', which includes new apparel and challenges. A release date has yet to be confirmed, but it's not too far away.

Disappointed in Rockstar here. Zombies? Really? After all the lengths you went to to make this as realistic a representation of the Wild West as possible? Very glad this is only DLC, I'll not be going anywhere near it.

It's hard to believe they're serious about this. Very disappointing move from one of the best developers around.

Its just their contribution to the Zombie Renaissance. I dunno if I'm intrigued enough to buy it though. The multiplayer modes are what are sinking their hooks in.

It's like I am playing CoD World at War and Borderlands all at once!!!
Come on Rockstar. You can do better...

I've said it once and I'll say it again - it's DLC. You don't have to buy it. I like the idea of being a bit silly with such a serious game. I enjoyed the game proper, got the most out of it, and now I'll enjoy doing something silly in the same location. I don't think you can really justify being 'disappointed' in the developer here. They already gave you a 40 hour plus experience that was enjoyable until the end. They owe you nothing with the DLC.

Agree with Jason here; this sounds like a fun little riff which is perfect for the DLC format. It's a fun extra, nothing more, and I think people need to view it in that context. It's not like Rockstar announced a sequel which abandoned the realism and tone... it's just a cheeky little tidbit.

I'm kind of suprised that anyone is suprised?

Zombies in Rockstar games arn't new. Who hasn't run around as a zombie in bright yellow underoos in GTA 4?

I'm just excited to see some single player DLC love.

I must admit wishing I could ride the skinned horse carcass once I had had my way with it. It was more a 4 horsemen fantasy than a zombie one though.

I'll be voting with my wallet, as per usual, and not paying for this DLC. It's, again, too expensive for what they are (as far as we know at this time) offering. Zombie stuff aside, which incidentally doesn't appeal to me anyway, it just reeks of DLC for the sake of DLC without any real new ideas or listening to the fans.

They owe it to themselves to keep up the high standards set with Episodes from Liberty City. If they're going to expand Red Dead, why not go down the same path and build a mini-story around one of the other major characters? Throwing zombies into the mix is just ridiculous, Rockstar have been aiming for realism so why the hell would this cross their minds. I just don't get it.

It's still the best game of 2010, don't get me wrong, but there's a lot of potential with DLC...and they're not taking advantage of it.

All I'm getting out of commentary on this piece of DLC is something approximating the following:

"Rockstar made a great game, and their other DLC has been pretty solid! But this one will suck, 'cause it has zombies!"

Maybe I'm missing part of the story, but it seems like expectations should be erring on the side of optimism, going off previous evidence?

It's probably going to be the best piece of DLC ever if you like zombies that have no place in the main story.

But I don't, so it won't. That's just my view but after seeing the tripe infested hole that was CoD: WaW, it basically killed any optimism I had for zombie DLC.

The way I look at it, if you want to kill zombies then play L4D or Dead Rising. **** off and leave my Western wonderland in peace.

Okay, fair enough that you're not interested in zombie western action. But you're still hating on this because of something a different dev put out... which is a bit of a head scratcher.

If they had put out some good Red Dead DLC before this, then I wouldn't be so annoyed. It just seems like a big waste of time and money to me.

Well, for what it's worth, I hope you end up being wrong about it icon_smile.gif

Knowing my luck, it will. And after all my ranting, there's no way I could confess to buying it...

All in all.. a skeletal horse does sound kinda cool.. and if done "right" it could actually be a decent mod.. but.. that's provided they don't get all kitchy and throw standard, boring zombies and stuff in.. as long as they keep it in the realm of a western with undead stuff.. it might actually work well..

Still not going to buy it.. too expensive.. I'd rather support indie developers.

I agree. Why not churn out more DLC that actually builds upon the masterpiece Rockstar have created here. The zombie stuff seems like a side project that should have come out far later. As you all know, making this sort of stuff takes time which I believe would have been better spent expanding the story. Hopefully a true single player piece of DLC is in the works. That's something I would definately pay for.

This is DLC, I think it is a great idea. Jeez, whatever happened to wanting creativity? If you don't like Zombies or paying 800 points then RDR is a great western experience on its own. Why aren't they allowed to have some fun while working? I'm not sure everyone at R* San Diego loves westerns enough to spend years and years creating nothing but that. People really will complain about anything.

How have they changed your western wonderland? What percentage of people buy DLC 5 months after release? I'm pretty sure it won't taint the acclaim that RDR has achieved.

That's the key ingredient lacking from this update. What game doesn't have zombie crap in it these days? The idea is seriously getting beyond stale. I think Cian's point here is that there's literally a ton of original stuff Rockstar could have come up with here. Looking at the amazing game they've created, the sky is certainly the limit. Instead, it almost appears as they've sold out to appeal to the people who just somehow can't get enough of zombie modes in games.

Going down the sensationally fictional 'undead' path in Red Dead Redemption is about as relevant to the game's mythos as implementing a dating sim component to Halo via DLC.

I meant creativity from the development team. They have spent the past 4 or 5 years working on RDR, I'm sure they are well and truly burnt out on the western stuff. Maybe its just me, I enjoy seeing the kooky stuff that developers include with their games where they can just have fun and not worry about changing the core experience.

If they came out and said that the DLC was singleplayer content where you hunt down another member of your old gang people would be pissed that they withheld content from the game so they could sell it for $10 later. This is something that obviously wasn't worked on during core development (or at least focused on) for RDR, if they diverted resources from the initial production cycle than I can understand people being a little annoyed.
