Halo: Reach now available for $1,485

360 News | Woops...
Microsoft is known for over-pricing full retail games on Xbox Live, but nobody saw this one coming. A recent post on Xbox360achievements.org has directed us towards an unusual piece of news.

If you follow this link over to the Xbox Live website, you'll find the highly anticipated Halo: Reach available to download. But not at the standard price. The game weighs in at 7GB, costing 99999 MSP which is roughly AU$1,485. Are the Halo fanboys among us willing to pay such an extraordinary fee? Is it really worth it?

Of course not, but that doesn't matter because you'll need to enter a pre-paid code to get past the validation screen. It looks as though this download is reserved for a special group of people who have been given the difficult task of playing the game early. Australian gamers will have to wait until September 14 to get their hands on Halo: Reach, at the slightly more affordable price of AU$100.

They did the same thing for crackdown 2. It's downloadable for media types to review and publish opinions ahead of the release so that their is plenty of buzz come launch day. It also helps M$ keep tabs on all the copies they hand out for review as they are not physical.

Out of interest after reading the total, i thought i either matched or possibly surpassed the 99999 total. Turns out i was slightly off the mark - i've used approx 71500 ms points over nearly 4 years of owning the 360 console. This takes into account every arcade title i have purchased and also Game on Demand (yes i took the plunge and have purchased a few GoD titles in recent weeks). I didn't count the DLC i've purchased (Rock Band/Guitar Hero tracks, Burnout Paradise, Gears of War 1 & 2 map packs etc) nor the dashboard themes etc.

My maths sucks but using $24.95 and $49.95 price points for 1500/3000 points respectively... i've spent $1,148.85. It would be slightly less than that (but still between $1,000 - $1,100), as i didn't always pay those prices for the point cards.

Early on i used to be able to buy the 1500 point cards for $20 - $23, and not long after they first became available... i would purchase the 3000 point cards for $44 - $48.

So.. if some rich bastard (or a collective of Halo fanatics) wants to fork out 99,999 MSP.. would they be allowed to play?.. Or would M$ prevent them from playing do you think?

Yes it's for reviewers only. But I got a laugh out of it.
